While states should have power and say regarding what's best for their students, the federal government needs to set common standards. A solid baseline or foundation in order to define what a student should aim to learn in order to have better long term outcomes. If we want to be competitive with other countries economically we have to ensure that ALL of our children have the education to help them be competitive, innovative, and a chance at success in life. Also without federal guidelines and accountability vulnerable populations would be even more vulnerable. Take a look at the existing issues with racial and economic segregation even with regulations in place. Take what's there away and we could be transported to a time before Brown vs. BOE or Mills vs. BOE. FAPE must be mandated and have the weight of the federal government behind it. A caveat that the people in the federal government making the policies need to be educated on evidence based intervention/instruction, be in touch with the American people, and understand the affect policies could have on ALL students NOT just the majority population.
