H.R. 6691 - the Community Safety and Security Act
I’m in support of the passage of the House bill H.R. 6691 AKA - the Community Safety and Security Act of 2018 — would more broadly define “crime of violence” under federal law by listing which offenses qualify as crimes of violence. That’d be in addition to the current definition that includes offenses that have “as an element the use, attempted use, or threatened use of physical force against the person or property of another.” The bill would address a 2017 Supreme Court ruling which found the definition of “crime of violence” unconstitutional because of its vagueness.
This bill wisely clarifies the definition of “crime of violence” in the federal criminal code to address the vagueness of the current definition, which was found to be unconstitutional.
