I have 15 years of experience as a scientist working in water quality for government agencies (state and federal), and doing research funded by the government. The stream protection clauses of the Clean Water Act are essential to maintaining our drinking water supplies. Also maintaining water quality provides recreation, which is an important economic engine for many local municipalities. I have worked extensively on water quality in developing countries that do not have these types of environmental protections and the effects on people's every day lives are devastating. The evidence is clear that the U.S. economy benefits from higher water quality standards.
