I'm not sure it is necessary for the US Senate to comment on this at all, but the reunification of Jerusalem under Israeli sovereignty was (and continues to be) a good thing that deserves celebration. Now there is open access to the historical sites in the Old City regardless of religious background...it was borderline nightmarish trying to visit the Old City before 1967 and if you were Jewish (Israeli or not) you were barred from entry. There are many different opinions regarding the West Bank and Gaza Strip, but everyone should celebrate the reunification of Jerusalem for history's sake. Also, Arabs/Palestinians in Jerusalem have the right to claim Israeli citizenship if they so chose (a right not afforded to those in the West Bank). Jerusalem should never again be divided...if a final peace deal is reached, the city should remain unified under Israeli sovereignty or possibly as a corpus separatum as spelled out in the 1947 partition plan.
