The death penalty issue is loaded with all manner of prejudice including racism, rage, hatred, revenge and junk science.
Seems to me that a Life Sentence Without Parole is in fact the far greater punishment; even lengthy prison terms are severe punishments. Yet, I have a problem with keeping those convicted of heinous crimes alive for decades at taxpayer expense as a fair and just punishment. Is that a reasonable burden? Is death really a fit punishment? Perhaps execution is acceptable after an exhaustive appeals process.
However, given this administration’s desire to please people who are highly prejudiced including racists, and given this administration’s inability to act rationally and humanely particularly with respect to brown people, I want to take away the ability of the Federal Government to put any citizen to death at this time.
