This was cited as being too weak by advocates of yet more government surveillance in tv interviews the day after the Vegas shooting that killed 58 people on US soil. No one said that shooting would have been prevented by more surveillance they just demanded more surveillance. Each renewal of a finding, executive order or law such as this should be subject to very rigorous justification including evidence that the surveillance is actually preventing harm to American citizens. Each small infringement of constitutional rights is another step on the slippery slope towards tyranny. None should be taken lightly or without detailed public debate, analysis and direct evidence. No steps should be taken in fear or anger. The question of what exactly this authority does for the US citizens and how exactly it does that has not been answered to my satisfaction. Tyranny at home and tyranny abroad are both to be avoided. Foreign nationals have the same human rights as American citizens. Are we certain that this authority in no way contributes to tyranny over American citizens? Or foreign nationals? The burden is on the sponsors to Prove no harm before asking for renewal.
