I would like to put aside the legitimate and compelling argument that what makes this a great nation is the diversity that is built around the tradition of welcoming immigrants regardless of ethnicity, culture, and religion. Instead, I would like to focus on security. Some who are opposed to this bill have said that it would make us less safe. This is simply not true. Banning immigrants and refugees from the targeted countries actually helps those who would do us harm. It gives terrorist organizations a very powerful recruiting message. They can point to the ban and say, "You see, the United States hates you because of your religion." This message would be particularly persuasive to disenfranchised people already living here. So, voting yes for this bill not only maintains one of the core values upon which this great nation was built, it also increases security by denying the enemy a powerful propaganda tool.
