I have issues with this bill but am saying yes because I agree the minimum wage must be increased. It is heartbreaking to see people trying to survive on the current minimum wage. It can’t be done without heavy reliance on safety net programs, and then I’d hardly call it surviving. It’s more like a struggling existence. Which is why I question the timeline of this bill. I recognize businesses may need a certain amount of time to adjust. I’m not particularly concerned about corporations, but do have some worries for small business owners. Still, this timeline is way too slow. The working poor need help now. I’d suggest speeding the timeline up to get to a minimum of $15/hour by 2022 at the latest. To begin with it should go to $10/hour by early 2020 at the latest. Then be at a minimum of 15/hour by early 2022. And it shouldn’t stop there. There should be a mechanism for automatic increases as long as essential economic criteria are met. Raising the minimum wage isn’t just helping the working poor improve their lives and care for their families. It’s good for the economy too since people with more money buy more things, thus creating jobs and opportunities. So even if you aren’t a humanitarian everyone should support everyone else having a living wage.
