Drug abuse is a disease, not a character flaw! Not only is this conclusion supported by scientific analysis, it is good policy. As a country, we need to eliminate the fantastical thinking that if we marginalize a group, they will simply disappear. The truth is that if we allow states to expand drug testing and use those tests to exclude individuals from receiving the financial assistance they desperately need, all we are doing is creating a group of desperate people who will engage in criminal activity. More importantly, this is not the problem that many in the GOP make it out to be. Our poor are not out of work because they are drug addicts, but because we don't do enough to protect their jobs. That means that in the end, we are engaging in behavior that marginalizes the sick, invades people's privacy, denigrates them when they are down, and unnecessarily wastes money. And the only difference between who is tested and who isn't will depend on the happenstance of their geography. Nothing could be more un-American.
