There is a lot of money and power in DC - much more than some of our states. There are a lot of people in DC - much more than some of our states. They pay taxes and deserve full representation despite the particulars of how DC was formed. If some trumpublicans are confused by the idea of a 51st state, perhaps we should look into combining a couple of the less populous states that draw more from the taxpayer's treasury than they contribute- you know, to make them more efficient and self-reliant- less dependent upon the more populated states having to support them. We also have large populations in Puerto Rico which by size and taxpayer base should be granted statehood. A little further out but still conceivable, there is also the combination of various territories and protectorates that we tend to forget about who also contribute to the taxpayer's treasury. In today's world, geographical boundaries are becoming much less important than shared common interests and we could combine these territories and protectorates into the state of 'Oceana' to represent their shared common interests as water bound US entities.
