Without some type of job protection, hiring & retaining a position becomes a political, personal weapon by the employer; one of the many reasons ‘due process’ came into being. At federal & state level governments, it becomes a political ‘plum’ ; at the independent, corporate level it becomes personal. Modify some of the terms & timelines of due process but it is the right, fair, & equitable way to ensure employees are given a ‘fair’ shake. Maybe, just maybe supervisors & managers should be held accountable for fair & timely evaluations to make sure all who work under their supervision are competent, skilled, and trained to be able to do the job for which they have been hired. To those who are saying ‘yes’: let’s say you have a position which you are totally capable at, highly skilled, love, & have received positive evaluations. A new supervisor comes in, doesn’t like you because you know more about the department then they do and goes about ‘trumping up’ charges against you to dismiss you; or have a ‘favorite’ he/she wants to replace you? You have ‘due process’ available to you now. You want to lose it? Unfortunately there are albatrosses in all businesses but by and large, most are not. Managers & supervisors who don’t do their jobs should be reassigned back to where they came from.
