Do I want to modernize and improve efficiency of the IRS? Obviously yes, that’s a simple question. However this bill also has a provision for making it illegal for the IRS to make its own online filing system for taxes. This would be a free system for qualifying lower-income filers. Instead, for-profit companies like TurboTax and Intuit will be tasked with creating a free/low cost alternative. They lobbied quite hard for this provision because the alternative free public option would mean they’d lose a lot of money. We already know for-profit companies that don’t face regulation or major competition will exploit consumers because its already happening in other industries (Telecoms and Healthcare companies are in the public’s sights right now). That’s not to say that will definitely happen here... but history would strongly suggest it will. And so, this piece of legislation has bipartisan support, but it has this provision that’s flying under the public’s radar.
