The unilateral establishment of a national emergency created by the President himself is a ludicrous reason to fund a border wall to extend across the entire US/Mexican border. This is the most fiscally irresponsible move the GOP could possibly support. The continued fear mongering by the President regarding crime, sex trafficking, drug infiltration, and illegal immigrants coming in to take our jobs is becoming ridiculous noise. The facts are pretty clear; while we need to address immigration control, many of the problems he points to have either vastly declined over the years or would not be solved by a costly, ineffective wall. Border security needs may include selected areas needing fencing, as has been done in the past, but given technological advancements in security hardware and software, any funding for a wall should be balanced with new technology in mind.
The GOP has already handed the country the most damaging, deficit producing tax reform bill in his country’s history. Instead of benefitting the middle class, who bears the brunt of taxation, it benefits the top tier of wealth and big corporations. This is undeniable. I’ve already completed my tax returns for 2018. Given the meager increased income in my monthly retirement check of $70/month over the course of this past year and my increased tax return over 2017 of only $300, I’d say I’ve been scammed by the GOP and their promises of over $4,000 overall returns. This is certainly not worth the trillions of dollars in deficits created for our future. Deficits that we, the middle class, will be burdened with and that have the potential of bankrupting our country over the long term.
So, it’s time for the Congress get real and recognize that unbridled spending for an unnecessary wall as part of border security just shouldn’t fly. I’d much rather see tax dollars used for efforts in areas that would increase jobs and create taxable income that would help reduce our deficits. Infrastructure, job training, clean air and renewable energy, and attracting new business ventures, etc., are all things that would benefit America.
Stop the efforts which bring no tangible benefits and quit trying to claim Democrats want open borders or don’t care about immigration control. That is BS! We need immigration to fill jobs that most Americans won’t take or don’t possess the requisite skills. I heard the other day that there are a million more jobs available in this country than can be filled by the unemployed. If that’s the case, then why are we turning away people who are seeking asylum or other legal immigration paths. I don’t expect every immigrant to possess the requisite job skills to fill all of our needs. I only want them to come with the desire to work, educate themselves to improve their opportunities, and participate in building our country’s greatness. That is what America is about, not slogan building.
