The Child Tax credit is designed to help parents take care of their children and is an effort to prevent children from living in poverty. We gain nothing as a nation if more children live in poverty. And in purely economic terms, undocumented immigrants are paying for more than their fair share. According to Pew, the average household income for undocumented immigrants is $30,000 and they pay an effective tax rate of 8%, while the effective tax rate for the top one percent of earners is 5.4%. On top of that, undocumented workers pay nearly $12 billion in state and local taxes (source: Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy) and pay another $12 billion into the Social Security Trust (source: Social Security Administration). So I think we can afford to let them have this small refund of taxes they have already paid.
