My “Yes” on this subject is a tentative one, as I straddle the fence. Do I think our police should be afforded better, easier, more accessible means toward widely needed mental health services? Totally. Should the government be allowed to audit and review the ins and outs of where federal program money is going and how it’s spent? Definitely. BUT.. The unfortunate truth is that mental illness in this country has become an epidemic. The need for federal funding has spread far beyond the confines of our police and ought to be dealt with in kind. It’s a good idea, a necessary one, but it’s one that should be reflected in the reinstatement of programs like CHiPs and the ensured continuance of Social Security and Medicare. Only in America will you find that actors and professional athletes average upwards of 2-3 million dollars per year while our nurses, teachers and military - well, public service professionals in general, really - are left to struggle and rely on the “help” offered up by the powers that be.. The whole thing is a travesty of immeasurable proportion. How sad is it that the little voice in the back of my mind still says that at least we’re not spending the money on somebody else..
