I would not support this Bill. From my perspective, this is yet another feel good Bill.
The people in leadership positions are quite wealthy, and losing pay for a few weeks won’t and should not influence them.
I think that folks need to get their heads wrapped around the idea that this is how our national government was designed to function. It is the means that the two entities called the Congress and the Administrative Branch carry out their respective Article 1 and Article 2 responsibilities. They are not necessarily supposed to act harmoniously in all occasions; however, they should never lose sight that they are sworn to act for the people and to protect and defend the constitution.
It is my recollection that Article 1 grants the power of the purse to the Congress, while Article 2 grants powers to the President, including veto power. I also recall that Congress can overturn a veto if they have ample votes. In this case they will not.
It seems to me that the Congress can easily appropriate the funds for the passive barriers on the boarder or the President can neglect his primary responsibility to protect the national sovereignty. They have appropriated many times that amount to protect the boarders of other nations.
My vote is for the Congress to fund the request and move on, on beyond the politics that have plagued our nation for the past two years. As for this silly feel good Bill, let’s move beyond the sophomoric nonsense and do the people’s work.
