While it's clear that China is a threatening presence globally, trade war is not a workable answer because it hurts our own country as much as it hurts China. China's growing power lies in all the small countries it has lured into debt by providing infrastructure and badly needed loans. While our foreign policy is antagonizing everyone, including our allies because we refuse to participate in the Paris Agreement, the Arctic Circle joint statement and the UN's attempt to rule against sexual war crimes, China is affably shaking hands and making friends. Then China turns predatory against regions it lays claim to, and we are powerless to intervene. Trade wars aren't going to resolve any of this. We need effective foreign policy!
