The house next to mine has been in the foreclosure process since 2009. The nice family who owned it had to move out of state and in with older parents, pulling their two young kids out of school. Turns out it was triple mortgaged. For seven years three banks have been squabbling over it, while the house itself has sat there empty and falling apart. It has been battered by Hurricane Sandy, all kinds of nor' easters. Chunks of the roof are falling off. But okay, yeah, why don't we just let the banks go right back to the days of triple mortgages and predatory lending. That's a great idea. Ugh.
