With the threat of a partial government shutdown over border security funding averted (at least until next Friday), Congress may vote this week on two other major items on its year-end agenda ― ending U.S. support for the Saudi coalition in Yemen and reauthorizing agriculture programs with a new Farm Bill.

The House starts its week on Monday with votes on 10 relatively uncontroversial bills under the fast-track “suspension of the rules” process that allows for limited debate, including a bill to ensure Secret Service agents can be paid for their overtime work.

The rest of the week will feature votes on bills aimed at reducing maternal mortality and providing care to infants born prematurely. There will also be votes on resolutions expressing support for the alliance with South Korea, condemning the Assad regime (plus its backers in Russia & Iran) for war crimes against the Syrian people, in addition to opposing Russian efforts to undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty and dominate European natural gas markets.

The House may also consider the conference report to the Farm Bill if the lawmakers on the conference committee are able to broker a deal between the competing House and Senate versions of the bill. The key issue preventing a breakthrough in that negotiation is the question of how stringent a work requirement for recipients of food stamps should be.

On the other side of the Capitol, the Senate begins its week Monday with a procedural vote on the nomination of Justin Muzinich to be Deputy Secretary of the Treasury in advance of a potential confirmation vote.

Later in the week the Senate may debate a bill to withdraw U.S. military forces supporting the Saudi-led coalition fighting Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen, and could vote on the confirmation of Jonathan Kobes to be a judge on the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals.
