Dan. I understand your willingness to think deeply and critically about this issue. But the electoral college was set up primarily as a way to preserve states rights in the conflict between slave and free states. It guaranteed that the south, which had a lower voting population maintained the potential of winning the Whitehouse. Given that there is no longer the driving need for the electoral college we really have no reason except tradition for keeping it. You expressed here that the college was set up to prevent mob rule as in Ancient Rome and Greece but that is accomplished via our separation of powers, bicameral legislature, and bill of rights so maybe it is time to make the system more democratic and let the people’s voice be heard.
