Thanks Linda! You said it all so I repeat it. Yes. Statues are not erected in public spaces to teach history. They are erected to praise the deeds of an historical figure - to say "He represents values we emulate". When it is clear that we do not value those deeds, e.g., fighting to destroy the United States so they could continue to own human beings, those statues should be removed from a public space and placed, if anywhere, in a museum of American history.
