No, gun stores are not essential. This is not the zombie apocalypse. This is a deadly virus that is spread through contact and prevented by social distancing. The second amendment is not in play here. All businesses that are not genuinely essential should be closed right now. The exception for gun stores speaks to larger issues though. Firstly, the feeding of the continually scared and pissed off angry MAGA base. Secondly, how little trump and others still comprehend the problem we are facing and how unwilling he and others are to fully confront it. Thirdly, just how selfish and self-serving some people can be. There are all kinds of businesses here in Oklahoma that have been deemed “essential” through the absurd stretching of definitions and squeezing through loopholes. And it is most likely going to cost lives. I am deeply sympathetic to those caught up in this horrific (and largely preventable) economic crisis. The incidental evidence I am seeing certainly indicates a big spike in both SNAP and unemployment applications. People are hurting. Nonetheless, we still need to place humanity over economics. Poverty is survivable. Dead is not. And economics do not matter when you or someone you love dies because people were too selfish to follow the rules. Close gun stores and all businesses that are not genuinely essential now.
