The most unequivocally disturbing part of Betsy DeVos’ crusade is “school vouchers.” I noticed that at least one person on Countable has referred to his freedom to spend tax money that he contributed to. Certainly, in one sense that is what vouchers are, however in effect they are just another gift to the wealthy of this country, those who would receive a rebate toward the private education of their children. Meanwhile, families that—even with vouchers—cannot afford the tuition of private schools are left to attend underfunded public schools. I have no children. I welcome the chance to contribute to the education of all children, especially those whose parents cannot afford private education. The public education system needs reform I have no doubt, but vouchers are not the answer.
