Dear Senator Cornyn & Senator Cruz - I cannot express my disappointment with the confirmation of Betsy DeVos, and your vote in support of her. Texas is not known for its stellar example of our Public Education process, and her lack of experience and our continued struggles does not lead me to think this will be a good result for our children. This issue seems to be my tipping point. I know I have not been a vocal participant in our legislative process until now. Yes, I vote, but until this issue, I have not made my voice to you be heard. Living in the great state of Texas, a state that I love, I have often felt like my voice, my vote doesn't matter. We are a red state. I live in a red county. And because of that, I have felt it a futile battle to engage. However, with THIS presidency, his stances, his overt disregard for the truth, his battering of our free press, and his stacking the Cabinet members from the very Wall Street tycoons he used against Hilary Clinton in the campaign leads me to believe we will need our Checks and Balances in place more than ever. As my representatives, I expect you to represent ME and THIS constituency, and not be a microphone for everything the President says. And I take responsibility for that, too. You probably HAVE been doing what you think your constituents want, because those of us on this side have not made our voices heard enough. Consider yourself "on notice" that THAT is about to change. You WILL be hearing more from us, and from me, so that you become acutely aware that there are two sides to every coin, and no coin always lands on heads every time. We may be the minority here, but I'm guessing you are seeing its not as MINOR as you may have once thought. Please don't see this as combative-on the contrary. I understand that there are many points of view, and I believe we should all come to the table to discuss and COMPROMISE. You have a daunting task ahead of you, and I wish you success in it. It does no one any good if you do not. But keep in mind as you move forward that you are the voice for ALL of us, not just the 59%and 56% that voted for you. 40+% is NOT insignificant. And my hope would be that you showcase a willingness to work for us and find compromises with us. It would be helpful if your voicemail boxes were not full, but I'm assuming you are hearing a lot more from both sides. Better put your seatbelt on because this cycle looks to be a bit more exciting than in years past. I look forward to hearing more from you in the months and years to come. - Laura S.
