To the folks flipping out about how DeVos will destroy our education system, if she has such power, perhaps we shouldn't have a federal department of education where one person can set policies for the entire nation? Wouldn't it be nice to escape her policies by, I don't know, maybe having more localized control to do things the way you want? But wait, isn't that the very thing she supports?! More localized control and choice? As a public educator myself, I sympathize with the concerns that she lacks experience in public education, however, has anyone looked at the qualifications of our previous secretaries of education? All had backgrounds in public education. Is public education today going well? No. So I for one, don't think it's such an insane idea to have someone with a different background and a new perspective on education try new things. If you were dying of cancer, would you only allow a doctor who's had cancer treat you? Experience is not the end all be all. But then again, I don't think her department should exist anyway for the very reason so many people are concerned about now. No one person, should have that much power and impact over the education of millions of children.
