What is it?

This resolution would express the sense of the Senate against allowing current and former diplomats, officials, and members of the U.S. Armed Forces to be questioned by the Russian government led by Vladimir Putin.

As a simple resolution, this legislation is non-binding and wouldn’t advance beyond the Senate if adopted.

Impact

Russia’s government; current and former diplomats, officials, and members of the U.S. Armed Forces who’d be questioned by Russia’s government; and the Senate.

Cost

As a non-binding resolution, this bill has no cost.

More Information

In-DepthSenate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) introduced this resolution to express opposition to a suggestion by Russian President Vladimir Putin floated during a press conference with U.S. President Donald Trump in Helsinki, Finland. Putin said he’d allow U.S. law enforcement to question the 12 Russians indicted for activities linked to election meddling in exchange for letting Russia question certain Americans, which Schumer said Congress should prevent:

“Certainly if the president agreed to such a request, Congress must do everything in its power to block it. There can be no room for debate, no room for discussion. We must be clear and clear quickly.”

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said the Trump administration opposes Putin’s idea:

“It is a proposal that was made in sincerity by President Putin, but President Trump disagrees with it. Hopefully President Putin will have the 12 identified Russians come to the United States to prove their innocence or guilt.”

Official Title

A resolution expressing the sense of the Senate against the making available of current and former diplomats, officials, and members of the Armed Forces of the United States for questioning by the government of Vladimir Putin.

The idea that this is even being talked about is mind blowing. I am horrified that anyone thinks this is an option.

Are U kidding me?! Putin has no GD business “questioning” any American, let alone an American diplomat. These individuals haven’t been indicted by a Russian court. Putin’s just playing F with America and Trumps just the worshipping A$$ to do it with. Fuck that shit. Pardon my French.

Why’s this even a question? Oh, forgive me. It’s a question because Putin’s puppet hasn’t a spine strong enough to stand independent of the puppet master. The entirety of our Diplomatic Corp must be insulated from this sort traitorous exposure. The simple answer is YES they must be protected.

I don’t even see the necessity of a question like that.

Since when is it okay for foreign powers to interrogate American diplomats? Are we really considering selling out our people and our sovereignty to Russia?

Of course the dictator and former KGB murdered should not be questioning any American. Are we already a banana (or orange) dictatorship?

I can’t believe this has to even be discussed. Letting a foreign government, especially one run by a ruthless dictator who cyber attacks the US and annexes sovereign nations, question any of our citizens is unacceptable.

Is this the redline for GOP to begin impeachment proceedings? If not, then WTF would be the redline? That Congress had to step in with a resolution to stop this atrocity is beyond the beyond. Vote to oppose this traitorous bullcovfefe!

There is no reason our government should allow an adversary to question members of our government or military. Our leaders should be protecting these people.

As a non binding resolution, this bill has no point. Let Trump schedule interrogations for whoever he wants. Pass a bill to prevent that. If ignored, it’s grounds for impeachment.

This is another piece of legislation with no purpose, just a vote. Get some hair on your butt and stop PLAYING politics. Do something! Represent the country, not your party.

We are actually CONSIDERING whether or not to do this?😳 Have our legislators completely lost their minds? 🙄You guys are supposed to BALANCE THE POWER of the Executive Branch, not march lock-step to its tune! I am SO EXASPERATED with you people I could SCREAM! ( Not you, Alan Lowenthal, or you, Dianne Feinstein and Kamala Harris! I am proud to have all of you to be my voice on Capitol Hill!!❤️) I am referring to the Party in power whose job it is to stand up for their constituents’ REAL needs and issues. I find hard to believe that a majority of your constituents support this insane idea. Like me, many of them belong to neither party. You were elected by many of those independent voters, in fact, it is quite likely you would not have been elected without them! In a situation such as this, how can you in good conscience allow party politics to override your responsibility to your districts as a whole? Are you listening independent voters? If your legislators are not representing YOUR issues and YOUR values, they do not deserve YOUR votes! YOU have the power to hold them accountable! We don’t have to be a member of a political party to organize a voting block of independent voters and let them know we do not approve when they fail to represent us properly!

Of course they should oppose it. It’s unthinkable that it’s even being discussed. Only a Traitor would betray his country’s military and ambassadors in such a way.
