senate Bill S. Res. 564

Commemorating 75th Anniversary of Victory in Europe Day & Honoring General Dwight D. Eisenhower

Argument in favor

Victory in Europe Day marks the victory of the U.S. and its allies in the European theater of World War II and the surrender of Nazi Germany. On the 75th anniversary of V-E Day, this bill represents a simple but important gesture to recognize the sacrifices of Americans to preserve the freedoms we enjoy today.

I like Ike. I like honoring our traditional American values, principles, courage, honor, honesty, ethics and the whole notion of ‘e pluribus unum’ that out of many we are one. I like a leader and a people that was focused on coming together to do what was needed to be done and having the courage, ingenuity and selflessness to actually get it done. I like having an honorable leadership focused on protecting the all of us instead of just themselves or just a few of us, who knew how to work with allies collaboratively to achieve a common goal, who could lead the world in the rebuilding and recovery for the post-war world’s all-of-us, including allies and defeated enemies. I am a child of the returning troops and even as a child I noticed the scars left on families in my neighborhood from lost loved ones, even though it was many years later that I understood the ‘why’ behind the ‘what’ of it was that I had seen. I remember learning about patriotism, honesty, honor and self-sacrifice from my parents and my schooling. I remember the costs of war to families from childhood friends whose fathers never made it home from the Korean War. I could see the pain, but it took years for me to fully realize their despair. When our Country accepts leadership that does not prize honor, cannot be honest, no longer represents our intrinsic American values that all people are created equal, that works for the benefit of the few of us instead of the all of us- I feel the same kind of despair that I had witnessed in all the people who had sacrificed loved ones to preserve our country, a country founded on protecting those ideals. I want THAT COUNTRY back again. … … … Still, to this day, I like Ike.

Argument opposed

While the Allies’ defeat of Nazi Germany was important, there’s no point in taking the time to recognize its significance on the 75th anniversary of V-E Day.

I'm opposed to anything which glorifies warfare. Of course, the details of wars need to be included in history books. But, having said that, the reality of war needs to be included and the root causes of each war also need to be duly noted as well. Wars are way more than what is generally the content of Hollywood movies.

What is Senate Bill S. Res. 564?

This resolution would commemorate the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day (V-E Day) — the victory of the U.S. and the end of World War II in Europe following the surrender of Nazi Germany on May 8, 1945. It would honor the American men & women who sacrificed their lives for the freedoms that millions of people throughout the world continue to enjoy, and salute the members of the Armed Forces who gave of themselves so that future generations could be blessed with a more peaceful world. Additionally, it would celebrate the extraordinary service of 5-star General Dwight D. Eisenhower, whose mission it was to defeat the German Army and end World War II in Europe.

As a simple resolution, this legislation wouldn’t advance beyond the House if passed.

Impact

The U.S. Senate; and American history.

Cost of Senate Bill S. Res. 564

As a simple resolution this legislation would have no cost.

More Information

In-Depth: Sen. Pat Roberts (R-KS) introduced this resolution to commemorate the 75th anniversary of V-E Day, the end of World War II in Europe, and spoke about it on the Senate floor:

“75 years ago, the scene across America and Europe was quite different than what we see today — thousands of people waving flags, dancing, hugging, kissing in the streets, all covered in confetti. In the early morning hours of May 7, 1945, in the small town of Reims, France, the Supreme Allied Commander, Dwight David Eisenhower, signed Nazi Germany’s surrender and sent a cable to Washington and London that the mission of the Allied forces was fulfilled, thus ending the Nazi pandemic of tyranny and genocide. The surrender took effect on May 8, and for the first time since 1941, the U.S. Capitol was bathed again in light.

Most military historians now agree that it was Eisenhower’s unique skill and persuasion that enabled the Allied effort to be successful. As Winston Churchill said, “There is only one thing worse than fighting with allies and that is fighting without them.” Simply put, Ike led the effort to preserve Western democracy and freedom, and later, as President in 1953, America experienced 8 years of peace and prosperity.”

Roberts told the Mcpherson Sentinel that amid the coronavirus “it’s a good time for people to reflect back to the Greatest Generation, what they did on behalf of their country and their common man.” He added:

“We’re all pulling together, much like we did in World War II. The only place where that is missing, unfortunately, is on Capitol Hill. There shouldn’t be any politics with a pandemic. But it’s gotten way too political. If we could just end this damn politics and all that embodies, and emanate the example of what people were doing during World War II, I think that’s the message.”

This legislation has the support of 32 bipartisan cosponsors.

Of Note: World War II in Europe began on September 1, 1939, when Nazi Germany invaded Poland, and the U.S. became officially involved in the war in Europe on December 11, 1941, after Nazi Germany declared war on the U.S. following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor four days earlier. Nazi Germany was defeated by the U.S. and its Western allies securing shipping lanes across the Atlantic and pushing the Germans out of North Africa and Italy, before invading France and pushing into Germany from the west; while the Soviet Union rolled back Nazi gains in the east. More than 200,000 Americans were killed in the European Theater of Operations during World War II, including 104,812 between June 1944 and May 8, 1945.

After the surrender documents were signed in Reims, France, Supreme Allied Commander in Europe Dwight D. Eisenhower, sent a concise & straightforward one-sentence message to Army Chief of Staff George Marshall to notify him of the surrender. In a radio address, Eisenhower said victory was achieved because soldiers’ “record of gallantry, loyalty, devotion to duty and patient endurance” and “the devoted efforts of thousands laboring in the services of supply” were “welded together into one engine of avenging power — to the dismay and destruction of our enemies.”

Since this is basically just another useless resolution I want to remember this, the FBI had a responsibility to investigate Trump. He lied about adoptions and multiple staff contacts. If Moscow and many other republicans weren’t complicit Trump would have been removed long ago. https://youtu.be/SKSc8BLXAJ8

Why has trump blocked Fauci and other health officials from testifying to congress if he has done such a great job. Here in Florida the medical examiners were releasing coronavirus death data to the public. As they have in every health emergency since 1992 but the state has just made them stop. trump helped send Rick Scott to the senate and Ron DeSantis win the governorship. More than a dozen times trump and his administration was warned about the threat of covid throughout January and February. Warned of the death toll, warned of the economic fall out and warned about China lying about the virus. All while trump himself praised China’s job dealing with the virus, said our economy was fine and told us not to worry he had it under control. trump couldn’t be bothered to use the Defense Production Act to prepare for this crisis but he will use it now to force workers back to the factories that had unsafe working conditions in order to handle and process our food. “Why did Maryland have to go to South Korea to get 500,000 tests”. The chances of a second wave are real likely especially since we still can’t test and trace cases like we need to in order to even try to get back to normal. States opening in spite of not meeting the recommended guidelines won’t help any either and then we still have to deal with all this: Vaccine expert Rick Bright is filing a whistleblower complaint, his attorneys said Thursday. Bright said he was ousted as director of the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority because he resisted efforts to join President Trump in pushing hydroxychloroquine as a potential covid-19 cure. A preliminary study, which has not been peer reviewed, was posted that indicated hydroxychloroquine had no benefit in patients and was associated with higher rates of death. Nancy Messonnier, the CDC’s director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, was removed from her post as her agency’s coronavirus response chief after saying publicly on Feb. 25 that Americans should begin preparing for “significant disruption” to their daily lives from this “severe illness.” trumps good old go to distractions: blaming immigrants for our woes and threatening war. All to distract from his epic failure of a response to the pandemic. WHO gave the U.S. real time live updates on the spread of covid right from the start of the outbreak. We have employees of the CDC that do a rotation with WHO. trump continues to repeat claims that their are beds, ventilators and tests for anyone who wants or needs them. That is not true, state after state still have not been able to get enough supplies having to compete against other states and sometimes being out bid by the federal government. trump stopped federal testing after making a bad deal and once again has left the country to fend for themselves. What the fuck did we elect the guy who said he alone can fix it for. But hey we do have the highest death toll now in the world, so winning I guess. Didn’t take long for trump to remove the inspector general who was to oversee the $2 trillion stimulus spending. trumps son in-law announced in a press conference that the national stock pile of emergency equipment and supplies is not meant for the states but for them. Within a day the official government webpage for the Strategic National Stockpile was changed to match his language. trump bragged about his press conference ratings and blamed nurses and doctors for steeling masks during a covid-19 public update. So with tests not working, not getting to the right places and no respirators. Don’t worry his ratings are great. trump’s administration has been withholding a Threat Assessment Report from Congress since Feb. 12 that warns the U.S. is unprepared for a pandemic. Against all advice trump continues to claim we will be back to normal soon and apparently now we are sacrificing our grandparents for the sake of the stock market. Here in the U.S. trump tells states to fend for themselves when it comes to medical supplies at the same time he writes a letter to North Korea offering them help. WTF U.S. intelligence reports from January and February warned about a likely coronavirus pandemic. In briefing notes trump crosses out corona and writes in Chines virus. He’s making this an us vs them (racist) issue. trump claimed Democrats were using the virus as “their new hoax,” downplayed the danger, repeatedly contradicted public health experts and spread falsehoods, such as saying the virus will go away when it gets warmer. Two weeks ago, Trump said the virus was “very much under control” and that the number of people infected was “going very substantially down, not up.” Soon, he declared on Feb. 26, the total number of cases will be “close to zero.” Stock market at a 12 year low and layoffs due to the Corona virus are just starting. Officials say the response by the White House to the Corona virus has been complete chaos. If you think Pence knows what he’s doing when it comes to the Corona virus take a look at how he handled the HIV outbreak in his state. The White House got rid of its top official leading the government response to a global pandemic and essentially folded up his office. This means no senior administration official is now focused solely on global health security. This year the White House proposed a budget that cuts money from the very health agencies that will be dealing with the coronavirus. The U.S. Justice Department moved Monday to drop its two-year-long prosecution of a Russian company charged with orchestrating a social media campaign to interfere in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. The stunning reversal came weeks before the case was to go to trial. Judge cites Barr’s ‘misleading’ statements in ordering review of Mueller report redactions. Iran has almost tripled their stock pile of low-enriched uranium and have blocked access to possible nuclear related sites all since trump pulled the U.S. out of the Iran Nuclear Deal. Why did the state department hold up the visa of a renowned German professor who was scheduled to teach a class on the rise of far right extremism. A senior intelligence official has warned law makers Russia wants and will likely help trump win re-election. We only know this because trump demoted him for it. Now that trump can do what ever, check out the list of criminal friends he has been pardoning or releasing early from prison. Like former Illinois governor who was found guilty of pay to play politics and former New York police commissioner who was being charged with tax fraud. As well as the former owner of the 49ers who’s state he wants to win this year. Federal judges have called an emergency meeting after Roger Stone case intervention. More than a thousand ex-justice department officials have called for Barr’s resignation and have called for staff attorneys to resist interference. trump has again interfered in a criminal case having Barr reduce the sentence of trumps co-conspirator Roger Stone, who was found guilty of lying to Congress and witness tampering. trump is running out of friends who aren’t in jail, being prosecuted or pleading guilty. $650 a night at Mara Lago and $17,000 a month at Bedminster is what the tax payers are being charged by trump for the secret service to stay at his resorts. We now live in trumps world where you are punished for speaking out against what is wrong, trump has removed Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman and his brother, as well as Gordon Sondland. 75% of Americans think there should have been witnesses and FOXs own poll shows half of Americans think he should be convicted and removed. 24 emails show trumps thoughts on withholding Ukraine aid and the Justice Department is refusing to release them unredacted. A congressional budget office says our deficit will surpass $1 trillion this year in part because of trumps 2017 tax cuts and increased government spending. trump told Bolton to withhold Ukrainian aid until they announced an investigation against his political rival. trump has rolled back parts of the Clean Water Act that would directly benefit real estate developers. Shit water for us, big buildings for him. trump has made it easier for our kids to eat junk foods at school instead of healthy alternatives because he is petty and does not care at all when it comes to our children. Marie Yovanovitch a U.S. ambassador was followed, threatened and then fired all at the direction of or directly by our president in exchange for dirt on a political rival from a Ukrainian prosecutor who didn’t like her because of her support for anti corruption groups. Russian spies hacked into Ukrainian gas company behind trumps conspiracies, again entangling Moscow in our politics. trump is trying to divert another $7.2 billion in pentagon funds for a wall that no one wants and wouldn’t work. Accused Obama of being week, pathetic and a bad negotiator so he was going to start a war with Iran in order to win re election. So much for bringing the troops home. 90 minutes after phone call with Ukraine president aid was withheld. Christianity Today now says trump should be removed from office. White House officials feared Putin influenced trumps views on Ukraine. trump, “I new it was Ukraine because Putin told me.” trumps inspector general report says FBI had authorized purpose to investigate trump campaign Russian ties. Three constitutional scholars have stated trump has committed, what is clearly spelled out in the Constitution of the United States, impeachable offenses. Attorney General Barr’s handpicked prosecutor says there is no evidence that supports Russia investigation was a setup or hoax. Why was bipartisan approved military aid to Lebanon held up for months by White House.(Jared Kushner has a lot of ties to that part of the world) Giuliani in talks to be paid by Ukraine official, while they were working together to attack trumps political opponent. Donald McGhan ordered to comply with subpoena. Bolton’s next:) Devin Nunez met with Ukrainians and directly pushed for Biden investigations. The meetings were set up by Giuliani’s Russian criminal friend Lev Parnas. Sondland was on a “Domestic Political Errand.” Was there a quid pro quo? Sondland, “Yes, Everyone was in the loop”. David Holmes, testified that Ukrainian officials “came to understand what was required” in order to get military assistance and a meeting with trump. U.S. ambassador to Ukraine felt threatened by trumps remarks and was threatened by trump while testifying. Long time friend and confidant of trump Roger Stone, found guilty of lying and witness tampering. trump has asked the Supreme Court to keep his taxes hidden. So, no more separation of powers in the government? trump sought status of Ukraine investigations showing aid was depended on the investigations themselves. trump complains that witnesses all speak from 2nd and 3rd hand knowledge yet ordered Mulvaney not to testify. Laura Cooper testified that the Pentagon sought clarification from the trump administration about the hold up of the Ukraine aide and received none. A second person has said they reported sexual misconduct involving a former doctor who’s been accused of sexually abusing nearly 300 men over a 17-year period to Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his staff felt they would not get the millions of dollars in aid money without publicly committing to launch the investigations Trump wanted. Senior trump administration officials considered resigning en masse in a ‘midnight self massacre’. State Department official says Giuliani was engaged in a campaign ‘full of lies and incorrect information’ about former ambassador. trump has issued pardons for two soldiers being tried for war crimes and returned rank to a soldier who took a selfie with a dead body. trump to pay $2 million for charity foundation misuse. trump wanted attorney general Barr to hold a news conference saying the president broke no laws on Ukraine call. White House official who heard trumps call with Ukraine president was told to keep quite. White House lawyer moved transcript of trump call to classified server after Ukraine adviser raised alarms. He has politicized our national security and has chosen Putin and other dictators over our own congress and security agencies. “I stated to Amb. Sondland that his statements were inappropriate, that the request to investigate Biden and his son had nothing to do with national security, and that such investigations were not something the NSC was going to get involved in or push,” Vindman adds. Lt. Col. Alexander S. Vindman, a top Ukraine expert on the National Security Council is testifying that trump demanded that a foreign government investigate an American citizen in exchange for Congresses approved aide. Just reached a $984 billion deficit while he lines his pockets with our tax dollars and foreign money at his resorts. $400 million in aide money was withheld from Ukraine back in August and Ukrainian leaders were told it was not red tape, that they needed to talk to Chief of Staff Mulvaney to resolve it and make a CNN statement about Biden in order to receive said aide. Rudolph W. Giuliani, the president’s personal lawyer, is running a shadow foreign policy in Ukraine that circumvents U.S. officials and career diplomats in order to personally benefit President trump. Igor Fruman and Lev Parnas. Look them up. North Korea just tested a submarine launched missile. Deserted our Kurdish allies who have been fighting ISIS with us and now are being slaughtered. All because he has a tower in Istanbul. “The Americans betrayed us. We do not trust them anymore,” she added. These used to be our Kurdish allies that stood against ISIS. He is refusing to comply with the law. He is using the power of the presidency to withhold aide to one of the worst humanitarian crisis on the planet in exchange for political favors in order to sway the 20/20 election. He is acting like a criminal and threatening the life of the whistleblower. Mr. America first is sending troops to Saudi Arabia in support of a murdering dictator who spends millions at his hotels and resorts. Corey Lewandowski testified to congress that trump ordered him to obstruct justice. He is blocking information that pertains to the safety of our country from reaching congress. He has been threatening NOAA, a federal agency, with punishment if they do not disavow the truth and side with his lies. He invited the Taliban to Camp David the week of 9/11. He is a #PussyAssBitch He’s doctoring weather maps to try and prove he’s not an idiot. He has stayed at trump properties 293 days in 3 years, that’s our tax dollars going directly into his pocket. He took money from military daycares to pay for a wall that won’t work and no one wants. The Vice President and the Attorney General are both spending tax payer dollars on trump hotels, lining his pockets and currying his favor. He has privately instructed aides to skirt laws and regulations to get the wall built faster — and told them he will pardon them if necessary. He is pressuring a government agency to give a contract for his wall to a company whose chief executive is a donor to one of his top GOP allies in Congress. He took hundreds of millions from 127 different projects (FEMA being one of those) for his wall. He thinks nuking a hurricane is an idea. He is host the next G-7 at one of his own resorts. Again our tax dollars paying him directly. He taunted Iran by tweeting a classified image of an Iranian rocket that had exploded, thereby potentially compromising U.S. intelligence capabilities. His own company would save millions from the low interest rates he is demanding. He was going to give you tax cuts through your paychecks but decided not to. This year the richest of us payed less in taxes than the rest of us. He is destroying the economy with HIS trade war. We will soon average a 1.2 trillion deficit. He is repeating NRA talking points on background checks so expect no action taken regardless of the fact there has been 27 arrested over threats to commit mass attacks since El Paso( NOT TOLEDO). He made fun of republicans being afraid of the NRA and then caved after a 30 minute phone conversation with them. He bragged about indefinite child detention because it brings families together. He is refusing flue shots, that protect us all(google influenza pandemic), to immigrant children. He is attacking fellow congresswomen in really disgusting ways and making anti-Semitic remarks about Jews calling them disloyal. He thinks he’s the chosen one based on a conspiracy theory web sight. He has: Obstructed Justice. Is profiting from the Presidency. Colluded - They had a meeting & lied about it. Advocated political & police violence. Abuse of power. Engaging in reckless behavior. Persecuting political opponents. Attacking the free press. Violating immigrants Right to Due Process. Violating campaign finance laws. Racist: Speaks directly to and often tweeting straight from white supremacists. Calls them very fine people. Told fellow congresswomen to go back where they came from. Called them shit hole countries. Called them murderers and rapists. Calls her Pocahontas. Took out full page adds calling for the death of five innocent black kids in New York, 1989. Literally has said in an interview he has Hitlers speeches, My New Order in his nightstand. Our Money: Spent campaign finance money on hush payments to silence a porn star he had an affair with in order to hide it from the voters. Has spent over $100 million of our tax dollars playing golf at his own golf courses. Has never divested from companies and advertises and profits off the White House. Was going to cut Medicaid and Medicare funding to pay for the tax cuts he gave to the rich. Is actively destroying farmers lives with his trade wars that we all know only hurts our pockets not Chinas. Has made the lives of every truck driver across America as well as our own, more dangerous by removing safety regulations that only benefits the pockets of the CEOs of those companies. Has removed any and all protections we had in place from work safety, environment, women’s rights, LGBTQ rights and gives that power back to the CEOs, oil companies, men and old white men. Saudi funded lobbyist rented 500 rooms at a trump hotel he never divested from right after he became president. Wonder why? Sexual Predator: Accused by more than 20 women of molestation and rape. Bragged about said molestation on tape. Has cheated on all three wives (see above). Has made sexual remarks on camera about his daughter. Belittles and bully’s women. Not even sure he’s aware he has two daughters. Idiot: Has allowed North Korea to grow there nuclear weapons program. Took the side of Putin over America’s own security agencies on the national stage. Lacks the intelligence and facts needed to communicate on a global level much less national one. Makes policy decisions based on FOX media. Lies when speaks. Doesn’t believe in science and quite often displays his ignorance of it. Russia: Lied about meetings with Russians. Lied about a trump tower Moscow. Personal attorney Michael Cohen (same guy who broke campaign finance laws under trumps direction) had contacts with russian officials. National Security aide Flynn resigned over Russian contacts. Jeff Sessions recused himself because of Russian contacts. Manafort resigned because of Russian contacts. Campaign foreign policy adviser Papadopoulos met with Russians then bragged about it to Australians who then turned that info over to our FBI. Sixteen campaign officials had contacts with Russia and at least nine others new about it. Russian mobster lived in trump tower. trump casino was flagged 106 times for lax money laundering standards and same Russian frequently stayed at trump casino. Has been selling real estate to Russians for years. It really is surprising how many connections to Russians this man has. Rick Scott, Marco Rubio, Bill Posey You are my representatives. OLC policy: The indictment or criminal prosecution of a criminal investigation of a sitting President would unconstitutionally undermine the capacity of the executive branch to perform its constitutionally assigned functions. It’s time to do your job. You swore an oath to this country, it’s people and me to uphold the constitution. The president has never upheld that oath. How do you want to be remembered?

Yes. Having a day Commemorating the this 75th Anniversary of Victory in Europe seems a no brainer to me. We celebrated the 75th anniversary of the Oscars in 2003 for heaven’s sake. You tell me, which has a bigger significance in history? Ike was a great General: he served as the Supreme Allied Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force from December 1943 till the end of World War II in May 1945. He planned and supervised the successful liberation of German occupied Western Europe. Here are five of his accomplishments as President from 1953 to 1961: 1) He Sponsored and Signed the Civil Rights Bill of 1957: This was the first civil rights bill since Reconstruction. Much to Eisenhower's dismay, Congress amended the bill and critically weakened its effectiveness. 2) He Sponsored and Signed the Federal Aid Highway Act of 1956: This gave birth to America's interstate highway system. Eisenhower worked hard to get the bill passed and it was his favorite piece of legislation. 3) He Balanced the Budget, Not Just Once, But Three Times: Despite much pressure to do otherwise, he also refused to cut taxes and raise defense spending. His fiscal policy contributed to the prosperity of the 1950's. 4) He Ended the Korean War: He alone had the prestige to persuade Americans to accept a negotiated peace and convince the Chinese that failure to reach an agreement would lead to dire consequences. Eisenhower considered this to be his greatest presidential accomplishment. (here is a man who we say – he alone – he was not a man would have said that of himself.) 5) He Kept America at Peace: Eisenhower was confronted with major Cold War crises every year he was in office: Korea, Vietnam, Formosa, Suez, Hungary, Berlin, and the U-2. While more than once America seemed on the brink of war and those around him clamored to drop the Bomb, Eisenhower always kept a level head. He dealt calmly and rationally with each situation, always finding a solution that avoided war without diminishing America's prestige.

Ike was a Republican but before the idiots we are stuck with now. He created the Coast to Coast highway system of which Rte 66 is a part. Glad they are recognizing him Lloyd- Ike had an affair with that female driver & Ike was our 1st “black” President - is mother was a mulatta. As Kyle Corley said we beat the Nazis once. It’s time to come together & beat the Nazi- Communism we are faced with in our own country & worse, in the Whitehouse & Senate.

We used to do great things. The world used to look up to us. We were respected because of our willingness to help others. Now the world watches in horror as our country allows 10’s of thousands of Americans to die because of the Trump administration’s incompetence, selfishness, and greed. Trump won’t even help our own citizens, let alone anyone else. We were once the country every other wanted to emulate, and now we’re an object of pity for how far we’ve fallen. We’ll never fully recover what we’ve lost due to Trump and the Republicans. The lives needlessly lost, the businesses forever shuttered, the level of respect from the international community. They’re not even sorry for the people that they’ve killed, the livelihoods they’ve destroyed, and our diminished world standing. As Americans get sick and die, as we struggle to feed our children, Republicans concentrate on confirming unqualified judges, and making sure that if your employer doesn’t protect your health that you won’t be able to hold them accountable. That’s what they care about, incompetence, selfishness, and greed. It’s who they are.

So you create a so called honor veteran’s day. Seventy five years late. Most have already passed away. Are you going to submit a Bill for V-J Day in October for all the veterans in the Pacific? I have a great respect for all veterans, I just wish this would have been proposed when the majority were still with us. Most people today have no idea what these folks did.

It shouldn’t take much time & no cost - so sure! One of the few things that will actually get done in DC.

Eisenhower et al are The original antifas of WWII! A celebration of them is an excellent idea.

I am for this without a doubt and I wish we had this kind of leader today. Ike was part of the greatest generation these men and women marched off to war and when they came back never walked around the streets of America toting an automatic weapon on their fat bellies. They knew what war was, they knew what death was and they wanted no part of it in their homeland. In Ike the United States had a leader who took responsibility and took charge. Today we have just the opposite. A leader who did everything he could to avoid military service and then insulted an American war hero. Ike must be reeling in his grave. God bless Ike and his generation.

I'm certainly happy to recognize our victory in WWII, and Eisenhower's part in it.

Personally, I believe the major events of World War 2 should still be commemorated. Eisenhower is one of a handful of presidents worthy of of remembrance and study, even emulation. It is important that the commemorations not be in showy parades but should be tied to the numerous lessons learned and those not yet learned or already ignored or forgotten. For those unfamiliar with Dwight Eisenhower, beyond a Wikipedia read, I strongly recommend reading or watching his farewell speech, now referred to so the "Military-Industrial Complex Speech." This was given in 1961. https://avalon.law.yale.edu/20th_century/eisenhower001.asp https://youtu.be/CWiIYW_fBfY Progressive friends, watch through to the end. Ike was an old school Republican who was an essentially rational, effective and ethical administrator. He was also a visionary.

We should honor the memory of great American Presidents like Dwight Eisenhower. As a left leaning progressive, I would follow a Republican like president Eisenhower without the kinds of reservations I have for men like Richard Nixon or Ronald Reagan. I don’t consider Donald Trump a “man”, he’s really just a bunch of babies covered in spray tan wearing a cheap suit. Regardless, America has changed since the Eisenhower administration. The military industrial complex he warned us about has blossomed without limit. The great civilian space agency that he founded and that got us to the moon has been continually cut and torn by ongoing waves of politics. Trumps followers are all about making America great “again”? If they meant going back to the Eisenhower administration and progressing forward from there, I could have at least listened to them. It’s really too bad they seem to want to go back to a fictional 1980 that never actually existed.
