senate Bill S. Joint Res. 48

Should a Constitutional Amendment Protect Parental Rights?

Argument in favor

Parents have an inherent, natural right to direct the upbringing, education, and care of their children and the U.S. Constitution should protect parents from having that right infringed by the government.

They are my children I will raise them the way I choose. I do not want my children exposed to liberal leftist ideology or being taught Islamic ideology this is America.

Government has no right to make decisions over my child unless that child is in danger of abuse or neglect. Otherwise keep your inclusivity agenda to yourself.

It's a parent's responsibility, not the government. The government has enough to do just managing itself.

Argument opposed

There is no need for a parental rights amendment to the U.S. Constitution, the court system can be relied upon to appropriately balance the rights of parents versus the interest of the government.

While the idea of this bill is great, the introduction of it would be terrible. While it’s common knowledge that parents should be able to raise their child as they see fit, we can’t make it easier for parents to make careless decisions by saying “well, it’s their right”. This bill is going to make it much harder to fight parental abuse cases and to tell parents that, no, what they’re doing isn’t right. This bill will make lives worse, not better.

This is an attempt to extend "religious rights" to a parent's decision to abuse their child, wether it be by depriving them of education or foregoing the treatment of a child in need of medical attention. This is at best, unnecessary, and at worst, fatal.

We could call it the Betsy DeVos amendment! These rights already exist, why waste the energy other than to promote vouchers.

The idea is great. The execution would not be so Great. This amendment would make it extremely difficult to fight parental abuse cases because all they would have to do is claim the right to raise their child the way they choose.

I smell a fish. With a White House and many Republicans dedicated to returning us to the 1700s with its racism, lack of human rights for women and children, trying to establish a state religion of fundamentalist Christianity, further the fascist state, and with Betsy DeVos seeking to destroy public education while installing charter schools for profit of the wealthy with no teaching of science, critical thinking skills nor facts, and with child abuse an ever present danger, no, no, 1,000 times no.

I really worry about the implcations this could have for the US's education system. Enough people have already tried to impose religious education onto the public school system (a clear violation of the separation of church and state), or censure what is already taught (another obvious violation of the Constitution). There is no need to give them more power to do this, especially if their proposed changes to public education are only harming children.

No because sometimes parents are not fit to care for their children; sometimes that "privilege" must be taken away.

We don't need a constitutional amendment for that. Parents already have that right. If you as a parent want private education go ahead, but pay for it yourself

Frankly i see this as a solution looking for a problem. Who cares about this? If we are going to tackle amending the constitution let’s look at important things: term limits and a balanced budget.

As an adoptive parent of 2, it was already difficult enough to navigate the judicial system to adopt. More so i can choose how to educate my child and make decisions about how they are raised without an amendment. How about a constitutional amendment establishing the right to healthcare and meals?

Stay away from our Constitution. Having sex and popping out a child gives no one the right to own them like a slave. We do need to oversee the foster programs and when we see corruption in it lock those involved in it away.

Absolutely NOT. This Bill smells of Betsy DeVos and anything/everything that woman does is evil. She has ZERO interest in the children, she only cares about her radical religious agenda. As far as education is concerned, when a parent can tell teachers what and how to teach, they should home school. This will lead to problems in education and child abuse cases. This will lead crazy parents of transgender or gay children to be more able than they are already to abuse and try to "cure" these kids. Children with disabilities can be horribly hurt by parents that think they know better than doctors, specialists, educators, etc. This bill is a disaster of great proportions waiting to happen!!!

No. Education is a public right and a public responsibility. We must not mangle our constitution to give a payday to for-profit education, thinly veiled religious indoctrination, and yet another means for white flight.

While a law may be necessary to affirm these rights, the constitution already has these covered in the first and fourth amendments. I support the idea, but not as a new amendment.

Parents who have not lost the right to care for their kids still have sufficient protections for directing care for their kids. This is a waste of resources. Get to work on more important things!

❗️❗️❗️❗️While this does seem like no brainer. Note the words... "open up the Constitution". I ask you do we really want to open up one of this country's most sacred governing documents to this corrupt leadership. Because that, my friends, is exactly what they are trying to trick us into doing. ❗️❗️❗️Please vote no, until we have more evidence of ethical leadership.
