senate Bill S. 920

Should a National Commission be Created to Evaluate Federal Diabetes Programs?

Argument in favor

A national commission of healthcare experts focused on improving diabetes prevention and treatment in federal programs would put the government on the right track in terms of focusing its research, prevention, and treatment efforts.

With the current epidemic of childhood obesity, it only makes sense to begin addressing a national epidemic of diabetes that is sure to follow!

Status quo isn’t doing anything which is shown through diabetes being on the rise. NIH study that tested children between 2002-2012 shows 1.8% increase per year of type 1 diabetes and 4.8% increase per year of type 2 diabetes. The amount of funds needed is a drop in the bucket for the US because of our already huge national debt. The impact of saving lives and keeping Americans healthy far outweighs the monetary cost.

Argument opposed

It’s unlikely that a creating a national commission of healthcare experts to assess how federal programs handle diabetes treatment will be able to make a discernible impact on preventing and treating the disease.

The government does not need to spend $2 million on a federal program that would merely regulate another federal program.

Why don't we focus more on fixing our food and eliminating all the sugar, chemicals, and GMOs that are causing this problem in the first place?

I don’t think we need anyone else looking over paperwork that isn’t an expert in the field. Like insurance companies deciding what doctor you can and can’t see. It’s not right. So we don’t meet another government agency reviewing where we can save money from we need people deciding who truly care about finding a cure

I can’t imagine having Congress more involved in the diabetes epidemic would create solutions.

Whoever they have in mind to work this useless proposed program should be forced to get a real job in the private sector, not the government fantasy land. What a waste of our tax money this would be.

Use the money for healthcare for all and then diabetics can go to their own doctor

Why waste money when the real problem is lobbyists, BigPharma and GMO Food. Let’s focus on a real solution and not fake bandaids.

I have little hope that big Pharma wouldn’t influence more BS medical advice for diabetics.

I would like to say YEA but no here. Forming a commission when we already have a National Diabetes Foundation who already informs everyone on it’s new findings. It appears to me a brother in law commission. Kind if a waste of money 💰. I work with my doctor and Diabetes Nurse 👨‍⚕️. I also know the National Diabetes Center advertises items to eat that are really bad for you if you are diabetic. So you can imagine what a government funded commission would be like.

People got to grow up. I am a father. My wife and I stop bringing junk into our home. We spoke to our kids about eating healthy and what it means. My son started eating kale and all sorts of greens because he wants to be healthy. Instead of making a commission, maybe it is better to start teaching children good eating habits. That might help stop the rise of diabetes.

Obviously even with all of the millennial stuff going on it might seem like everyone knows what’s going on and this does sound like a waste of time and resources. But obesity and diabetes has been growing in numbers every year and nothing that’s been done has even put a dent in the numbers. We can’t just take away bad food until we remove lobbies from the capital, but maybe this can help people realize what’s really going on in America.
