senate Bill S. 649

Background Checks for Gun and Ammo Purchases

Argument in favor

Would curb deadly mass shootings by making it more difficult for persons with a criminal record and/or history of drug addiction to purchase firearms and ammunition.

Simple background checks should be MANDATORY for all gun and ammo purchases.

One step toward sane gun policy. It is tragic that this congress has put politics before the lives of the citizens—citizens who pay taxes and vote their representatives in and out of office, expect them to grow a pair and hold them accountable for countless innocent deaths. Members of congress: how will history judge your stance on firearms?

Argument opposed

Second Amendment concerns. Privacy concerns. Those determined to purchase firearms illegally would still find the means to do so.

Federal back round checks are in place. No need to expand this to ammunition. The gun show/internet sales portion is a MYTH. Everything has to go through an FFL to be purchased.

Guns do have background checks. Ammo background checks would be a back door attempt to make guns less effective. Can't discharge a weapon without ammo. By the way, removing all sources gasoline will certainly have an effect on air pollution. But then government employees would have to walk or ride bicycles. But again breathing produces carbon dioxide, a green house gas.

What exactly will background checks for ammunition purchases hope to accomplish? This is a complete nonsense bill designed to make people feel better while having no tangible effects on crime.

Hopefully this will be a first step in curtailing mass shootings. Unfortunately addition action will likely be needed

Anyone that is against this is in favor of crazy people getting access to guns whenever they want. Im not sure why you would be against this bill if you have nothing to hide...

Requiring a criminal background check for all gun sales is the single most effective policy for keeping guns out of the hands of dangerous people and saving lives. But currently, background checks are only required under federal law for sales conducted by licensed dealers. This lets criminals and other prohibited purchasers acquire guns — often from strangers met online or at gun shows — without a background check, no questions asked.

Background checks are already in place for weapons. No need to extend that to ammunition.

Who are you? Do you know the laws regarding the proper use, storage and insurance of this deadly weapon? Can you demonstrate that you know how to use this deadly weapon safely? If the answer to these questions then let them have a gun. Just the same as a car!!

The last 4 words of the already beaten 2nd Amendment are "shall not be infringed".... so therefore this would be unconstitutional

Checks on ammo are ridiculous. The system we have works. Criminals will not follow rules anyway. Enforce the laws we have already.

ALL gun purchases should be background checked. It doesn't matter where the purchase is being made.

No brainer. Ever wonder why Canada Australia and Britain don't have "mental health massacres"?. You can have second amendment access to guns and still keep them out of dangerous hands. Don't let the NRA fool you, it's not one or the other, you can have both.

If someone responsible is going to purchase a weapon, then they shouldn’t have any problem with a background check. This is to root out criminals and mentally unstable people.

Leave it up to the states. Those with strict gun control laws have the highest gun related crime. Here in Nevada we go through a FBI background check and the Brady bill will make it illegal for me to go to a range and allow a friend to use my firearm. It is beyond ridiculous.

Law enforcement in the U.S. can not even stop illegal substances from entering the country by the ton. What makes you think a background check is going to stop one crime. This is just another thinly veiled excuse to develope a registration data base.
