senate Bill S. 625

Should Media Outlets Owned by Foreign Gov’ts (Like Russia Today) be Investigated as Foreign Agents?

Argument in favor

Foreign, state-owned media outlets like Russian-owned RT shouldn’t be allowed to structure themselves in a way that lets them avoid compliance with the Foreign Agents Registration Act and spew propaganda into the U.S. This bill gives the Justice Dept. authority to investigate such outlets.

This is a routine way of clandestinely obtaining info. All countries do it including us. It should not be overlooked. Besides if trump hates media he should hate all media equally ;-) not favor Russian media. Let's face it, none of us ordinary people have any idea how spying really works and should assume the worst from foreign press esp from hostile nations.

This bill does not curb RT's, BBC's, France24's or any other foreign government-owned news organization's freedom of speech. All it does is simply allow the U.S. federal government to know exactly what is the purpose/message than they are trying to send out. RT will still be allowed to spew Russian propaganda.

Argument opposed

This bill is an attempt to stifle the First Amendment rights of media outlets owned by foreign governments. Besides, if the bill’s sponsor wants to investigate Russian-owned RT, she should also be going after the British-owned BBC and French-owned France24, among other foreign networks.

Foreign news organizations are still news organizations. We already have counterintelligence laws and organizations equipped to handle it. Let's not bridle any news organizations. If we truly value a free press, let's keep it free.

This is very suspicious. Seems like a slippery slope. It just doesn't pass the smell test.

This is absolutely absurd. Instead of worrying about other foreign media outlets, how about we go investigating some of our own country's media outlets from people like CNN, MSNBC, ABC, etc. who keep bashing our President and spoon-feeding the population far-left propaganda instead of informing the people?

Find it hard to believe they are currently not being investigated as a matter of course! Seems a little late in game now that our intelligence agencies have already confirmed that Russia interfered with our last presidential election.

We the people need to learn to check our our sources, be more scrutinizing, and look at many sources of news. A inquiring mind will be able to discern fact from fiction. Most of all we can not crush our freedom of press and information as our President is trying so hard to do. Look, listen, learn, get involved and stand up and shout out. Those are the real weapons of our democracy! Thank you.

Russia has no business meddling in our country nor should they be able to. We, as Americans have to do a better job of protecting our country against foreign intruders. Remember Pearl Harbor, 911 ? Please, let's not make that mistake again.

How about you investigate problems in the media on our own soil, America first. First remove the the splinter from your own eye, then you can see clearly to remove the splinter from your brothers? This is nothing more than an attempted to further the Russian conspiracy from the left, which also is much of the media of the left. See how all of that ties together? Distraction from the real problem...

Propaganda should be investigated from both foreign and domestic sources. The media is a powerful tool and as we have seen it can effectively deliver either facts or fiction-posing as facts. We need to do more than simply monitor the content/outlet, a comprehensive Media Literacy program in every public school would be a useful first step to educate the future voters of America. Free curriculum for grades 1-12 is available to non-profit's and no special training is needed to facilitate the program.

If a "News" organization is coordinating with the Russian government to spread misinformation and undermine our democratic process. The American public has a right to know if this is the case. A news organization should not be able to dodge our laws with shell corporations, and it’s time for the Department of Justice to investigate. The 1st amendment right wouldn't be violated because it applies to Americans not foreign entities trying to undermine the American journalism by putting out misinformation and propaganda. This bill is important because it provides the authority needed to request documentation of RT News and find out who they’re accountable to.

Another nonsense bill. How about we start passing bills that will actually benefit Americans such as a healthcare bill that works and reduce taxes for all Americans. In other words, AMERICA FIRST!

While feeling profoundly concerned about First Amendment Rights, I am even more concerned about Russian interference in our election and what may well be entanglements with our White House. More and more family and Cabinet members are being shown to be too close to Russian operatives for comfort.

There is such nonsense in fear mongering. Keep everyone distracted and uneducated and the government can spoon feed the populous all kinds of sweet candy that they never stop eating until the cavities appear. Do some foreign nations employ propaganda in some of their news agencies? Yes. Our government should be gathering intelligence to see if there are foreign powers using those agencies to harm our country anyway. Should our own population learn how to fact check and recognize propaganda? Yes. I find myself discouraged when almost every question and bill that pops up is something else that doesn't matter or will hurt most Americans. Let's stop trying to get back to the Cold War and work with the issues we already have.

Start with Fox News the foreign owned anti American propaganda machine designed to divide Americans and supporting Russia. There American RT network. Their propaganda is all designed around hate of "other" Americans pure and simple. Then add their repotting AM radio conspiracies as factual. They stretch the truth and just out and out lie. Why do we let a Saudi and Australian owned network to feature propaganda. At least make them label it correctly. Right now their broadcasting features out and out lies to support Trump/Putin any way possible. God help our stupidity.
