Born In The USA: Should A Parent's Legal Status Determine Whether Their Children Get to be Citizens?

Argument in favor

People are exploiting U.S. law to get citizenship for their children without following the proper protocols. This is unfair to those who wait their turn to immigrate and puts a drain on the American economy.

People with agendas continue to use the false narrative of comparing those who entered the country ILLEGALLY with those who entered LEGALLY, and followed the proper protocals to become citizens, as though there were no distinction between the two. Circumvention of our sovereign laws to remain in this country, cheapens pristineU.S citizenship by making it too easy to obtain it by those who feel no accompanying loyalty to our country, stresses our debilitated infrastructure, and threatens our national security.

Being a citizen should be a prized and cherished thing in our county. It should be related to The Fruits of the Poisonous Tree doctrine, simply if both parents are ILLEGAL ALIENS then a child they have here is not a citizen because of the illegal status of both parents.

Argument opposed

This country was founded by people whose parents were born elsewhere. Immigration on the whole, is critical to this country's identity and existence. We’re supposed to welcome the “huddled masses,” not turn them away.

Yes, using "anchor babies" is essentially exploiting the system, but this phenomenon is a product of the system. If it weren't so difficult to immigrate to this country legally, less people would have to resort to underhanded tactics.

    Considering the abuse and misrepresentation of the 14TH Amendment, I believe at least one parent should be an American citizen . This policy is one of the biggest incentives of entering our nation illegally . It also allows Visa holders the same incentive . While this policy is in effect, thousands of Anti-American foreigners are allowed to enter our nation, and give birth to an American citizen .

    If we want to welcome all people, we should update immigration law. Until then illegal immigrants are ignoring our laws, our sovereign borders and then demanding we treat them as refugees or permanent residents. If they want their children to be US citizens they need to start by showing respect for US law.
