senate Bill S. 39

No Budget, No Pay: Holding Congressional Paychecks When They Can't Agree on a Budget

Argument in favor

If Congress can’t come to an agreement on one of their most essential responsibilities — funding the government — they don’t deserve to be paid on time.

Senator Braun, Your bill is well meaning. However it should never come to this. Please do the Honorable and morally correct thing and vote to end this government stoppage. Think of the human misery everyone in the government is causing

While I appreciate the attempt, it’s too little and too late. Congress needs to be stripped of its ability to subjectively control its own compensation. Each state should form an article 5 convention and work with the other states to implement performance based (both short term and long term) benefit/compensation for congress. It makes absolutely no sense for legislators to make far more than 70% of Americans.

Argument opposed

This bill is coercive and could force Congressional members to vote for legislation they don't fully agree with. Not every member in Congress is a millionaire.

Better idea. Budget rolls over and we never have shut downs ever again. Congress can’t agree on a budget? We work off the old one until they do. No shutdowns, no missed paychecks. Seriously, there’s no need for all this grief. The last time that we had a full-on, real-life federal budget that was signed into law, it was 1997. Bill Clinton was president, and Newt Gingrich was speaker of the House (and only on his second wife). I couldn’t even vote yet. Everything since then has been continuing resolutions.

I like the idea behind No Budget No pay but feel in the long run this will be harmful to our government. This type of Republican bill disadvantages those in Congress who are not millionaires and could make them unable to serve. This would also chill the political ideas of those who wish to run in the future. I really believe this bill is a Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing designed to stop progressives in Congress, forcing them to agree with bills they don’t like for the sake of their families, not constituents. Those people are paycheck bound unlike our Senior Senators who have made a profession of the job. We need to find a way to incentivize rather than punish. We need bipartisan approaches that don’t force a choice between family and new ideas. No on this bill. Sonia v keep your ads and scams to yourself! Thank you Countable for taking her down after I reported it!

How about holding Mitch McConnell accountable for not allowing a vote on anything Congress passes to the Senate! Corrupt lying piece of shit isn’t doing his job and needs to be fired.

It’s not just the fault of Congress if a budget is not passed; it’s also the Executive Branch. And, if they can’t come together, the budget won’t be immediately passed. This is not necessarily a bad thing. If we hold Congress accountable alone and hold their paycheck we push them into a position they have to agree to the president’s agenda or not get paid. It is a form of extortion. Obviously, this is a Republican bill trying to force Trump’s agenda (remember the wall) that is not what Democrats think is good for the country. If we want to elect politicians who are not rich we can’t extort them to get the executive branch’s budget passed. Trump is the one who last shut down the government at length; how are you planning on punishing him - not Congress?

This would force those in congress who’s salaries aren’t supplemented by corporate PACs and lobbyists to agree to budgets that help corporations over the American people.

It may sound good to not pay Congress when they can’t come up with a budget, but I think it will only rush budgets that are ultimately bad for our country. The act of compromise sometimes takes time.

Be careful. Smells swampy. Untrustworthy Russian Republicans are hell bent to push their Deranged Careless Cruel Agenda serving the Wealthiest in this country. I’m concerned about enabling Bully tactics. I’m concerned about emboldening defunding agencies. I’m concerned about vulnerable Americans.

A bill long over due. Approving the budget is their number one priority. This is the closest we will get to a merit based action. Perhaps this will serve as the motivation for them to get their job done.

Initially this sounds like the way to go. HOWEVER, this type of bill could lead to rushing to accept things that should not pass without further debate and compromise (thus affecting the American people). Furthermore, I feel it would limit the field of candidates that would run for the positions. Not everyone is a millionaire and personally I feel that more people in touch with real life should be making policy! Incentives should be offered instead of no pay.

Amen to doingmypart’s comment. How can one piece of 💩, like McConnell, obstruct ANY piece of legislation he wants? WAY TOO MUCH POWER THERE! ONE THING THIS ADMINISTRATION AND THE REPUGNANTS HAVE SHOWN US IS THAT THERE IS TOO MUCH POWER ON ANY ONE INDIVIDUAL WHO HOLDS CERTAIN OFFICES IN OUR GOVERNMENT! THINGS NEED TO CHANGE BIG TIME! Another dumb Repugnant idea in order to force the junior members to vote their way! Do your damn jobs and work for the people, not the rich/corporations.

The only people this will hurt are the junior members, who have the least leverage to effect budget stalemates. And would in fact lessen their ability to vote their own constituents will and force them to bend to the will of the millionaire career politicians further cementing us into an oligarchy state. See; this is how they get you. Sounds like a wise idea and if the problems in Congress and the Senate were with the junior members it may work, but as it is now you’ll just be handing the keys to the inmates. Don’t fall for it!
