senate Bill S. 361

Should Americans Who Join Terror Groups Have Their Citizenship Revoked?

Argument in favor

If a U.S. citizen knowingly joins or assists a foreign terrorist organization they should have their passport and status as a citizen revoked to prevent them from harming other Americans.

If we're going to do this lets do it. Stop prioritizing just foreign terror groups and add domestic ones also - KKK, etc. No more half measures. Terror is terror whether it's white, red, blue, pink, or orange.

Argument opposed

Revoking a person’s U.S. citizenship for “providing material assistance” is problematic, as material assistance could be broadly interpreted and lead to violations of the person’s rights.

Step 1) make it so terrorists lose citizenship. Step 2) Classify people who disagree with you as terrorists. Step 3) Deport opposition.

Exactly how would this work? If an American citizen is going to lose their citizenship then it should be adjudicated in court with the burden of responsibility on the United States government to prove their case otherwise citizens could potentially lose their citizenship with a mere accusation on the part of the government. This is dangerous territory with a tyrant in the White House. Any person could be deemed a terrorist for no reason and with no evidence.

Too broad, a legitimate opposition party could be deemed as terrorist organization.

This is a slippery slope. What constitutes a terrorist group? KKK? White Supremacists? This will quickly devolve into a mechanism for classifying minority groups and revoking their citizenship. It will make immigrants into second class citizens if it is not applied unilaterally and forgive my cynicism, but I don't see that happening. We already have a justice system for prosecuting criminals. Let's just use that.

Senator Cruz, this is a terrible bill and you should be ashamed of yourself for sponsoring it! Your continued demonstration of an attitude hostile towards the constitution and the liberty of Americans is the opposite of what you claim to believe. This is yet another reason why I am working with thousands of other Texans to support, fund, and elect YOUR REPLACEMENT! Our great state has had its name sullied by your anti-woman, anti-minority, anti-freedom, pro-1% white nationalist garbage for long enough! Your support of 45 and his tyranny and deception of the American people WILL BE THE END OF YOUR POLITICAL CAREER IN MY STATE!

Too many people claim BLM is a terrorist group and ignore the actions of white supremacists and KKK members. This bill would make it FAR too easy for members of congress to define terrorists subjectively.

The problem with this is it's too broad. Is it if the government assumes you are a part of a terrorist group they can remove your citizenship? What about due process. This law seems highly unconstitutional because it doesn't allow for due process and can imprison anyone deemed a threat by just labeling them a terrorist

They should be tried in court as citizens subject to the laws of this country.

This should apply to white supremacists too because they're home grown terrorists.

Protecting people's rights is paramount. This bill has the potential to be interpreted too broadly and could be used to quiet political opponents.

This bill is far too broad and I worry that it could be used against civil rights protestors. I worry that peaceful protestors or groups would be targeted.

Absolutely. If one decides to be a traitor to this great Country then they don't deserve the privledge of being a citizen here.

Stripping citizenship is a huge deal. And we don't have a good enough definition of "foreign terror group." Sounds like fascism to me.

We can't leave individuals citizens of nowhere! Such a statute would be ripe for abuse. We could have McCarthyism run amok!

Once they join a terrorist group or any group that wishes harm to the United States, their citizenship should immediately and irrevocably be revoked. If they attempt to enter the country, they should be treated just as any foreign combatant or terrorist would. The same goes for those staying in the country and joining a terror group. These traitors are no longer American Citizens.

To vote nay it said it leads to violating the individual rights. That individual revoked his rights turning traitor against his homeland. I'm wondering if he's incarcerated in the US and he gets to see the light of day. Where will he be deported too? By revoking his citizenship does that protect us citizens from being drone strikes and murdered. I recall Ron Paul's goodbye speech to congress very well.
