senate Bill S. 286

Should Native American Tribes Have More Power To Govern Themselves?

Argument in favor

This is a bipartisan legislation that simplifies the self-governance process for Native American tribes, which could lead to more economic development for the participating tribes.

Aren't tribes on tribal lands already a separate entity? Keep it up and let them have their own government system. Then you will have absolutely NO reason to dictate to each state. I'm for that!

If they have there own counsel government and have a constitution of the tribe then they should be able to govern themselves

Only as far to give them city/county like status nothing more

Argument opposed

There should be a federal audit process in this bill to ensure that environmental laws (and others) aren’t violated if tribes assume responsibilities that would otherwise be regulated.

I'm pretty sure that my opinion will be VERY UNPOPULAR, especially among Native Americans, but I firmly believe that it's way past time for Native Americans and tribal lands to lose their special status! They don't have to give up their culture or their pride, but WHEN ARE THEY GOING TO BECOME JUST AMERICANS?! Calling them "Native Americans" is just as odious to me as referring to black people as African Americans! MR. PRESIDENT, TEAR DOWN THIS WALL! Barack Hussein Obama did all he could to separate us into factions and encourage us to consider ourselves victims of one or more other groups. It's time for all of us to present ourselves as a UNITED FRONT in the face of our enemies! It doesn't mean we have to agree on everything or even like everyone. But it SHOULD mean that we are all united in loving our country, giving it our undivided allegiance, doing our utmost to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, and looking out for one another and showing each other respect, even when we disagree.

Preserving their culture is the goal. Where does it stop. It will only lead to funding of every nationality and so called ethnic groups furthering diversity rather than inclusiveness. Let the pot melt.

I am part Native American and feel that there comes a point that they become Americans and not Native Americans. See LORAKI's comments.

They are part of the United States of America. They have the right to preserve their culture and their traditions but they are not their own country and nor should we treat them as such.

They say if you don't learn from history then you are bound to repeat it. We should have learned by now not to treat AMERICANS differently. NO group of Americans should be self-governing. See LORAKI's comments.

Again, we need to stop treating Native Americans differently than all Americans.

How long before they become US citizens and think like that? Yes our government and caused them a lot of problems. But their local laws can be enough to bring them to where they need to be.

Allowing them to further govern themselves would make others want to do the same. If we make leeway for some, it will cause jealousy which could ultimately bring us down from within.

No, they have enough already. This would be like allowing Muslims to institute Sharia Law within our country. Non-Muslims would be forced to stay out of Muslim communities for fear of being subjected to Sharia Law. Where do we stop?

The self government should be like county or city government to replace a level of government and not add another.

They're Americans, like it or not. They're not independent nations. The sooner they're fully integrated, the better.
