Giving Career Counselors More Resources to Help Students (S. 282)
Do you support or oppose this bill?
What is S. 282?
(Updated November 14, 2014)
This bill would fund state grants for improving the resources and guidance that students receive about their post-secondary education options. Grants would be implemented through the Secretary of Education, and go to training and hiring school counselors, and researching location-specific career options. That means looking beyond 4-year universities to target career paths through apprenticeships, certificate programs, and other vocational programs. Funding would also go to researching local workforce trends and offering recommendations for how schools could change their curricula to better prepare students for those post-high school opportunities.
Argument in favor
Expands how career counselors can advise students for post-graduation life — including 4-year university options and vocational programs.
Argument opposed
Schools already have career counselors, and if they need to be improved, it should be done at the local and state level.
Impact
Students between 6th and 12th grade, local high school curricula, career counselors, and community workforces.
Cost of S. 282
A CBO cost estimate is not available at this time.
