senate Bill S. 2705

Should Congress Prohibit the President From Redirecting Military Construction Funds by Declaring a National Emergency?

Argument in favor

The Trump administration’s attempt to divert funding from other military projects to build the border wall jeopardizes over 120 important military projects and endangers overall U.S. readiness. This bill would reverse that decision, return funding to important military priorities, and ensure that such a situation won’t happen in current or future administrations.

Will you please just let this wall lie go? It’s been breached by a 100$ tool from Home Depot, climbed in seconds by elementary school students, and flown over by planes EVERY SINGLE DAY. It was a dumb idea to spin up xenophobia in fearful insecure people. Anyone who looked past the rhetoric at reality could see it was a waste. Can you work on immigration reform based in modern realities? Please?

The President should not have the authority to move money already allocated by Congress without their approval

Argument opposed

The Trump administration was within its rights to move military funds around to fund the border wall, and Congress should respect the authority it gave the executive branch to set national security priorities. While it’s important to spend on other military projects, the border wall is an urgent priority, so it’s justifiable to pull funds from other military spending to fund its construction.

The defense budget is yuge, let me tell you something, out defense budget is greater than some countries have for their entire budget. If President Trump wants to use this money to repair the wall, to build it right, then what's the real problem, other than your voter fraud will be hindered. Maybe you should come back to reality and attempt to get the people of this nation to vote for you without pushing your socialist agenda, and stop pushing to remove our freedom. You wouldn't need voter fraud if you weren't if you fighting to increase inequality between races and ethnicities and gender and everything else you chose to slap a label on to prove it's different. C'mon libs... We're coming up on 2020, and your racist, sexist rhetoric is getting old. Stop drawing lines in the sand and talking about everyone's differences, and start talking about what we all have in common. We're all human, created equal. Then you won't need voter fraud.

No, do your job and provide funding to secure the boarder. It is because of Congress’ ineptitude that he is doing it. Bills like this are pathetic.

The power of the purse is Congress'. The Executive should not use subterfuges to bend the will of Article 1 of the Constitution.

When you have a Congress who is more concerned about getting rid of the president than doing what is best for the country you do what you gotta do. Well done president Trump.

No single person should be able to ultimately decide anything like this, especially if it is just to prove that he can follow through on an ill-conceived campaign promise, for his own political campaign booster. It’s an abuse of power and everyone knows it.

It is a national security problem and funds should be used to build the wall. If not all the illegals should move in with the democrats in Congress and they take care of them at their expense not taxpayers

This president and his revolving door advisors lack experience in determining anything to do with the military or national emergencies as he recently demonstrated by betraying Kurdish allies, clearing the way for the Russians in Syria and spitefully threatening to withhold federal aid to California after several years of terrible fires. Restrict his ability to cause more damage please.

The president’s got his greedy little hands in the cookie jar again. Military funds are approved by Congress for military expenditure on military purposes. A wall serves no legitimate purpose however does serve the illegitimate purpose of dividing Americans which is what our president and his grateful handlers seek to do. Our constitution does not provide for the executive branch to take funds appropriated for one purpose and use them for another, and while I don’t know the specifics, I don’t believe it provides for approved funding to be withheld by the executive. The situation at the border is a self-proclaimed election emergency but has nothing to do with a real emergency.

There is a reason this power was granted to the President and Commander in Chief. Do not limit this power due to stupidity. There may be a day that you too see the wisdom in allowing this to continue.

He doesn’t get to change the accounting Congress passed. He should wait for the next budget and put it in then. If Congress says no, it isn’t budgeted. He needs to follow the rules, just like anybody else!
