Should Voters Be Able to Cast Their Ballots by Mail in Federal Elections?

Argument in favor

Voting by mail is far more convenient than having to go wait in line at a polling place, and automatic voter registration at the DMV eliminates the hassle of having to deal with the state elections office too.

If we can securely file taxes through mail, we can vote securely through mail. Ask yourself why republicans want to make it harder to vote.

In the past I lived in States with vote by mail and AVR and it is fabulous. I would love to see it in Arkansas. Voter fraud is essentially non-existing, so that’s a totally false flag. Even partisan sources that went deliberately looking for it found vanishingly small numbers. (0.0000044%) ELECTION FRAUD is another matter entirely and one that vote by mail nearly eliminates. Gerrymandering can still be a issue, but at least you don’t get situations like what’s happening in NC. State election officials told a hearing recently that North Carolina’s 9th Congressional District was subject to a “coordinated, unlawful, and substantially resourced absentee ballot scheme” orchestrated by a GOP operative.

Argument opposed

Voting by mail can be relatively expensive because of the the number of ballots that have to be sent, and not everyone who goes to the DMV to update their license or registration wants to be registered to vote.

Do we really need another opportunity for easy access to voter fraud? Let’s make it as hard to cast a ballot as it is to purchase a gun!

No Way........ Voting by mail can be relatively expensive because of the the number of ballots that have to be sent, and not everyone who goes to the DMV to update their license or registration wants to be registered to vote. Voting by Mail would be, in my mind, likely to lead to, illegal votes being cast. How are voters validated???🤔 SneakyPete....... 4.18.19......... 👎🏻👎🏻MailBallots”...........

All for it. Colorado already does this. You can also drop at polling places if you miss the deadline or vote in person. Works great! Every state I’ve lived in, Illinois Texas, Montana, and Colorado has had it. If they can handle it, all states can.

I lived in Washington state and Oregon, both mail in ballot states. As such both states have high voter turnout. Voters can mail in their ballots or drop them off at Libraries and other specified drop off points. It's far less expensive than opening up various polls and man powering them, and buying and/or renting machines that end up flipping your vote. Voters can fill out ballots in the comfort of their own homes over coffee. No long lines in inclement weather. No closing down polls in minority neighborhoods or moving polls at the last minute, or dealing with machines that steal your votes etc etc the way republican controlled states do during elections, such as Georgia, Texas, North Carolina and so on. Watch, blue states will be far more receptive to mail in voting, while red states will demonize mail in voting. As to voter fraud, there is virtually none. Republicans use that as a crutch to suppress voting.

Of course they should. We have done it this way in Oregon forever. It’s more cost effective and it encourages more vote participation. The returns come in very quickly as well.

All voters should be able to cast votes by mail! This is the 21st century! We don’t need everyone to go to a specific polling place just to cast a ballot! That can easily be done at home and sent in the mail. If we truly believe in democracy, we should be making voting easier, not harder!

After reading other comments, I would now say as long as the concerns I gave below are taken into consideration, why not? However, we must have a receipt showing that our ballot was received. And there should be a waiting period to allow delayed mail to reach its destination. No way. How do I know if my ballot was received and counted? Our mail gets lost, a lot, on our Alaskan island. And when the weather is bad, which it frequently is, it may be 4 days, or more, before any mail gets off the island! So mail, to me, is NOT an option! Bad enough that the President, because of the Electoral College, is elected before we even vote! So why are we even a part of the United States and paying taxes when our vote doesn’t even count? Can anyone tell me this?

Voting should be convenient. Mail should be an option, especially for elderly, those who are handicapped, persons overseas, our military that are deployed, etc. Another option is to create a highly secure site for voting whereby we can vote by phone/computer. If all else fails, make the day a holiday, so that everyone capable and registered can get to the polls. We have put men on the moon and yet, have an archaic
