senate Bill S. 247

Should Americans Who Join Terror Groups Have Their Citizenship Revoked?

Argument in favor

If a U.S. citizen knowingly joins or assists a foreign terrorist organization they should have their passport and status as a citizen revoked to prevent them from harming other Americans.

Aiding our enemy is treason, and those people should have their citizenship revoked at the very least.

Terrorists of ALL colours are enemy combatants & as such should be denied citizenship & have it immediately revoked WITHOUT trial. This includes Bundy & his group of terrorists as well!

Argument opposed

Revoking a person’s U.S. citizenship for “providing material assistance” is problematic, as material assistance could be broadly interpreted and lead to violations of the person’s rights.

My NAY is not based on a belief that joining a terrorist group is not a horrible thing. It is based on my distrust of the system that would define which groups are terrorists. What would prevent Ted Cruz from defining a non-Protestant non-Pentecostal group as terrorists against his Christian sect? This is a dangerous precedent--not unlike the Patriot Act which created a mass surveillance state! I imagine that a person who joins a terrorist group can be charged with a number of illegal acts & this is unnecessary except in the the punitive world of right wing zealots who would happily incarcerate 90% of the US population if they could get any with it!

The word "terror" is always used so loosely. They are Americans born of this land, so no. However, they can still definitely be held accountable for any wrong doing.

    No as bad as I hate this an American has this right and this government does not have the right to revoke citizenship because someone's actions don't agree to the government idea of an idea citizen. On top of all this look at the laws this current administration has broken. They gave arms to the terrorist factions without any prosecution. They have made deals with Iran an sworn enemy of America so this is treason at the highest levels! Read the constitution if you feel that I'm wrong then let me know!

    Every day our military fights for the freedoms of our country. I was lucky to be a part of that fight. However, if you're fighting against that then you shouldn't want to live here anyways.

    Now pardon me here But this should clearly be a self explanatory policy for the federal government. We can't think broadly or we can't think narratively. Simply, in this case our political leaders need to think realistically! For instance, as an example a young man between the age of 21-28 departs from The United States. Previously before departing this individual converts to Islamic religious values. As the man is taking his meticulous flight to Egypt his next move is to cross the border of Syria and claim his position in the Islamic state (ISIS). If this American were to be a influential and powerful leader for the Isis organization as he rises to power and before you know it this particular American is the commanding leader for Isis, then We have a serious foolish system if this leader were to flee back to the USA and is granted citizenship. Next, he is in trial and he is found innocent or granted harsh amnesty, and lastly granted all of his citizenship rights as well. The point is, anyone that may affiliate or join a terrorist organization can be extremely influential depending on their position, If an American ends up being recruited as a commanding chief/leader for Isis. This leader flees back to the US to receive back his FULL CITIZENSHIP RIGHTS. We are providing citizenship to a leader that encourages and implements the beheading of AMERICANS! The sick execution of individuals based on their race, religion or sexual orientation, THEN THERE NEEDS TO BE AN IMMEDIATE CHANGE. Overall, Americans that join terrorist organizations that promote hatred against our nation especially and possibly if they are positively influential to the organization of terrorism then in a heartbeat should their citizenship be revoked. Remember, We don't have to necessarily think broadly or narratively but we must think realistically. And the straight forward example that I have displayed for you today truly exemplifies how realistic we must be in a imperative scenario pertaining to terrorism. By thinking realistic in this situation you are in favor of keeping our nation safe and secure, 2. Limiting the power and influence of terrorism, 3. JUST HAVING SOME COMMON SENSE OF HOW SIGNIFICANT OUR NATIONS NATIONAL SECURITY IS! I greatly thank you for your realistic thinking. However, for those of you who oppose revoking citizenship for these individuals you are showing that 1. You are not realizing how significant our national security is, 2. You are opposing KEEPING YOURSELF SAFE AND YOUR FAMILIES SAFE BECAUSE TERRORISM BELIVE IT OR NOT IS SCATTERED ACORSS THE NATION, MAYBE EVEN YOUR NEIGHBOR, YOU NEVER KNOW! And lastly 3. You are simply not thinking realistically! For those that oppose this bill I highly encourage you to rethink through your statement that you typed and ask yourself HEY AM I REALLY THINKING REALISTICALLY? Because the answer is [NO] if you oppose this bill. Nothing personal, but this is simply how I feel with my honest opinion when it comes to matters such as these. Thank you for your time. Not to brag, this is coming from a student graduating from 8th grade going into high school and I am greatly engaged in politics and this is how I feel about this

    So long as there is irrefutable proof of them joining terror groups, then they should by tried for treason, among other charges. If you disagree with our leaders, then protest and elect new ones. Don't kill innocent civilians.

    While I condemn terrorism, the definition of terrorism is broad. The fourteenth amendment protects citizenship.

    If you join an enemy of the United States, you deserve to have your citizenship revoked! You can either choose to pledge your allegiance to America, or you can choose to pledge your allegiance to some other nation or group. CHOOSE WISELY! Actions have consequences! Under current law the State Dept. can revoke the U.S. nationality of Americans who formally renounce their citizenship, become citizens of or pledge allegiance to foreign nations, engage in hostilities against the U.S., or are convicted of treason. This legislation would expand that list to include the following actions as grounds for the loss of U.S. citizenship: * Taking an oath or making a declaration of allegiance to a foreign terrorist organization after attaining the age of 18;
 * Entering, or serving in, a foreign terrorist organization;
 * Becoming a member of, or providing training or material assistance to, a foreign terrorist organization;
 * Accepting, serving in, or performing the duties of any office, post, or employment under the government of a foreign state or political subdivision, or a foreign terrorist group if the person knowingly declares allegiance to that government or group.
 The Secretary of State would be prohibited from issuing a passport to a person who is a member, or is attempting to become a member of a foreign terrorist group. If such a passport has already been issued, the Secretary would be required to revoke that passport. A person who is denied a passport or has their passport revoked or restricted may request a due process hearing within 60 days of receiving notice of the non-issuance, revocation, or restriction. Here's what the Obama Administration is pushing: [I don't care what Denmark's policy is! I think this is a VERY BAD IDEA! Who's going to hold the State Dept. accountable when these people decide to commit violent jihad here in America?! We don't need another Trojan Horse in the U.S. Furthermore, the concept of "rehabilitation" smacks of Orwellian thought control in this sort of situation, and I don't like the thought of Big Brother engaging in any kind of indoctrination.] State Dept.: U.S. Should ‘Rehabilitate’ and ‘Reintegrate’ Foreign Fighters Back into Society (CNSNews.com) The director of the Office of Countering Violent Extremism at the State Department outlined some of the department’s strategic planning Wednesday to counter “violent extremism.” Irfan Saeed praised Denmark’s strategy of rehabilitating and reintegrating foreign extremist fighters into society, asking, “What happens when they come back? You have to be able to rehabilitate them and then reintegrate them back into society.” http://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/isis-terror/denmark-de-radicalization-n355346 Speaking at a National Academy of Sciences’ panel on “Ideologically Motivated Violence,” Saeed described rehabilitation and integration as a strategy area of focus for the State Department. “We’ve seen a large number of individuals travel overseas to foreign conflict zones, places like Iraq and Syria, Somalia, Pakistan, Afghanistan,” Saeed said. “So what happens when they come back? You have to be able to rehabilitate them and then re-integrate them back into society.” He cited the program in Aurhus, Denmark, “where they’ve really struggled with this issue, but they’ve come up with a comprehensive way to try to rehabilitate these individuals once they come back and then reintegrate them into society.” Saeed discussed other strategies to counter violent extremism during the panel including intervention which he described as “something as simple as offers or alternatives to prosecution.” “It’s one thing to throw everybody in jail and figure it out later,” he said, but officials “understand that we can’t arrest our way out of this problem.” He also emphasized the importance of “strategic messaging,” arguing that “we figure if we can put some good messages on the internet, we can stop radicalization violence.” He cited the work of the State Department’s new Global Engagement Center, which is charged with “coordinating U.S. counterterrorism messaging to foreign audiences” and was established by Executive Order in March. http://m.state.gov/md259376.htm

    While I condemn any support of a terrorist organization, an American's citizenship and rights are far too precious to erode for a glimmer of extra security.

    On the surface I agree with this bill. My first instinct was to click in favor. I took my time after being reminded of McCarthyism. It has to much potential for abuse, lives can be ruined for no good reason. It needs to be reworked so that the potential for a use is at minimum reduced to the rarest possibility.

    Too much leeway for abuse in the bill i.e. "material assistance" could trap someone who unknowingly gives to an organization that ends up funding terrorists secretly (or obscures their motives).
