senate Bill S. 24

Should Federal Employees Receive Back Pay ASAP Once Gov’t Shutdowns End?

Argument in favor

Federal employees should receive their back pay as soon as possible after federal shutdowns end — this will help them make ends meet and make shutdowns less stressful for these public servants.

Government employees should not be penalized for the Trump shut down.

As I understand it, many of them have been required to work during the shutdown. By law, an employee must be paid for time worked...the Federal Government should be no exception!

Real Americans are hurting. People may lose their houses, go hungry, or not get their meds. Hurry up and get the government open. Stop holding a million American families hostage over this stupidity.

Argument opposed

The federal government has never failed to pay federal employees their back pay after previous shutdowns, and there’s no reason to think it’ll fail to do so this time. There’s no need for this legislation.

Only those who worked should receive back pay. Why should anyone who did not work get back pay?

Only the people who worked should get paid for their time. If you don’t work you shouldn’t get paid.

OF COURSE THEY SHOULD. This asinine shutdown is no fault of their own. Many are still being forced to work without pay. And even those not allowed to work were forced into that situation all because a racist in the White House wants to divide people and perpetuate stereotypes of people of color seeking a better life in this country.

Although the federal government has previously made good to those federal employees impacted by previous shutdowns, due to the high uncertainty of when the President will choose to shutdown it down again because he doesn't get his way, then YES those federal employees affected now need to be given their rightfully owed back pay as soon as the government is operating again.

Yes back pay with interest. All their bills keep coming in even tho their paychecks stopped. This has put a lot of undo stress on the very people who have the job of running the United States government.

Like it or not, the Democratic Party and Congressional members should suffer the negative consequences for their stupidity in closing the government down. 2020 can’t get here too soon to get rid of them being in control. Look if the government officials who are responsible for, and have any say over, the shutdown don’t lose pay and aren’t adversely affected, then the employee who have no say should be taken care of as well (if not better).

Yes, immediately. And someone needs to contact the Three Credit Reporting Bureaus and tell them that during this horror of a Trump side show people aren't going to be able to pay their car paymemts or mortgages which will definitely affect their credit for YEARS TO COME DUE TO NO FAULT OF THEIR OWN. THIS IS BEYOND A HORROR STORY

Absolutely. The men and women signed up to be public servants to care for their fellow citizens with the understanding that they would be taken care of by the government that they serve. The federal government owes them that respect and the back pay.

The nay-sayers say there's no reason for this to be passed into law because of what has happened in other shutdowns. However, with the current president, it is impossible to know what may happen since nothing he does has any connection to precedent. So yes, there is a need to pass this into law, thereby preventing any further abuse of power and abuse of federal employees. Oh, and it should be kept in mind that those who are not working have no choice in the matter. And unemployment can't help them because they are still employed, whether or not they are able to work.

Yes, all employees should receive back pay, with an additional bonus to help cover defaults and late fees and the suffering caused by these unqualified republican representatives. The tax payers should not be responsible for the bonus. It should be paid for by ALL Republicans, since they chose to harm the Citizens. There needs to be accountability for your decisions and actions as a representative. As Republicans do with all of their corrupt, unethical lobbyists, you must “Pay to play”. The same is true for their corrupt actions against the employees and the citizens. Republicans shall have to Pay to Play.... for their crimes with this fraternal and unethical shutdown.

Get back to work soon tell Nan & Chuck to do business the right way. Every store has walls. Every house has a wall. America and every country are like houses in a neighborhood with walls and gates. Unless you want to return the Republic back to the rightful owners the Native Americans and live life like they did at peace with nature, I welcome that option any day!

Government workers cannot freely obtain secondary employment without authorization. Forcing them to take leave without pay is cruel and will affect this economy due to bankruptcy, default on loans and rents, demerits on their personal credit, and generally halt all kinds of economic activity that keeps our economy healthy. Private businesses are also hurt, such as childcare services, food service businesses located near federal agencies, and any business those workers normally would patronize. We owe it to them to pay them for time they would have been working through no fault of their own. President Trump told the nation on national TV that he would shut the government down and take responsibility for it. This means paying the workers affected by his shut down.

Should the federal government be a model employer or should it be able to pay people when it feels like it? Should people who work get paid? Should people with jobs be forced to stay home at a moment’s notice even when there’s work to do? Is job/pay insecurity a good way to attract the best & brightest to Federal service? Can any other employer get away with this crap?
