senate Bill S. 2398

Should Voters Have Control Over How Federal Political Candidates & Campaigns Use Their Personal Information?

Argument in favor

Voters’ personal information is just that — personal. Political campaigns and candidates for elected office shouldn’t have carte blanche access to people’s personal information, and should also be required to inform people when they’ve obtained their information.

Please let us control use and access of our personal information. I do not need to be telemarketed to death for donations. Although, I apparently meet some demographic that says I lean toward Republicans; and I do take a perverse pleasure interrogating callers as to why I should support trump or others. The more I ask for answers to clarify their nebulous sloganeered responses, the more frustrated they become until they finally just hang-up. I guess it shouldn’t but it really does make me feel good to do this. Well Naw, I don’t want to be bothered anymore by slogans and tag lines. I want it to stop.

Both government and private companies must clearly obtain the users permission before they use your information.

Argument opposed

Political campaigns need data on voters in order to reach the appropriate audiences for their campaigns. Taking away political campaigns’ right to access voter information would hamper political candidates’ abilities to share their campaign messages and platforms with voters.

Nope to anything this nutcase introduces. She’s concerned with herself and her political interests ONLY. She should have been removed from her duties when she colluded with the Fake Ford and the Dems, leaking her fallacious accusations against Kavanaugh. Criminal old coot. Trump 2020. MAGA

This would be a barrier to grassroots campaigns without the funds or expertise to comply.

If people are worried about how their personal information is used then use common sense in how it is shared.

I am so tired of getting phone calls, emails and text messages asking for money and my vote! I have chosen my candidates and fully support them. But if you think I’m sending money to another candidate in another state you are nuts! I think my privacy needs to be protected and candidates should have permission from me to contact me!

We should always have control over how anyone might use our personal information... That being said, I'm a proud anti-liberal (more accurate than simlply Conservative Republican) so if someone gets my info from supporting President Trump, I'm not ashamed of my support, (even financial support, and I'm Welsh-Irish American, not Russian!) so I have nothing to fear. Go ahead, Trump, use my info as needed to show the left that they don't have as much support as they think they do!

Absolutely! My home is my quiet place and I detest uninvited guests who barge in over the telephone or through text on my cell phone. The more you harasse me that way the less likely I am to pay attention to you.

No entity should be able to use OUR data for anything that they have not gotten explicit ok from each individual.

Candidates should not share voter information without the donor’s approval! Just because we donate to a candidate should not allow them to share our personal information with any other candidate or organization without requesting and receiving our approval!

Yes Yes Yes and I want my web browser private too and let’s not allow business to collect our personal information they can’t seem to keep it protected. I’m tied of the republicans selling out the American people.

Let’s throw Google and Facebook and all the other media monsters into this conversation. What they have done with our personal information is indeed criminal.

Information about me is being monetized. I receive nothing from the sale of my info. Once it gathered by social media, the government, financial institutions, etc. I have no control over how it is used, where it is sold, or even a way to see what data on me is available yet alone request it’s removal. People must have a say in what their information is used for, by whole, and sold.

Yes, of course it is well past time that the selling and targeting of our personal information be outlawed. Let politicians speak to everybody or nobody, but they should not be able to disclose my private votes to the whole world.

This bill isn’t half of what I feel should be to protect or private information, but at least it does some protection. I am appalled at the amount of detail of personal campaigns are collecting, and what they are doing with it including giving it to third parties for nefarious or innocuous purposes! The government (or politicians campaigning to represent the people) should be protecting the people’s data not helping to disseminate, corrupt and/or sell it!

Yes, with more power comes great responsibility. Of course they should be held accountable, just like a private company should be held accountable for holding our personal information. We are there customers in a sense because we vote for them. They market themselves to us, we use our votes to give them their job. When a candidate is voted out of office or retires do they still have our information? I sure hope not haha. Definitely a good idea to establish a law to protect the public’s private information. Our founders would definitely agree to this.

Political ads are just spam created by short-sighted politicians. Do your job well and you won't have to spam your constituents as often.

Absolutely individuals should have control over not only how their personal information is used, but also what information is collected. This said, anyone providing information to a group or organization needs to realize there is no real privacy, and once the information is given the group or organization will do pretty much what it pleases.
