senate Bill S. 2311

Should the U.S. Ban Abortions After 20 Weeks of Pregnancy (With Exceptions)?

Argument in favor

Unborn babies can feel pain and abortions that occur after 20 weeks of pregnancy are cruel and should be outlawed except in cases of rape, incest, or to save the mother’s life.

There’s no reason why a woman would need an abortion after 20 weeks unless it’s a life-threatening emergency. Even then, it can still be debated that a woman can no longer terminate her child since at that point, the baby would definitely be able to feel pain.

Yes, murder should be illegal. If there is any defensible reason for government, it is first and foremost to protect life.

Argument opposed

This bill would place undue restrictions on womens’ right to make their own reproductive health decisions. There shouldn’t be a time limit on the right to an abortion.

When we deal with pregnant women who need abortions, we must assume that they have done everything possible to prevent having a child already. Abortion is a last resort because it is expensive, difficult, emotionally taxing, and potentially even dangerous. If Congress wants to honor religious freedom, don’t make laws based on Christian ideals. Support a woman’s right to choose what to do with her body. To the Senators, remember that your constituents are watching how you vote on this major issue: make the right choice for them.

Everyone. EVERYONE seeking an abortion after 20 weeks is doing so because they discovered tragic news during their 20 week ultrasound. These families already feel the harsh sting of a lost child, they already feel all the guilt the indignant and soulless evangelicals want them to feel, they have already considered every possible alternative, and they have still come to the right decision for their family. Your blinded righteousness need not be an additional burden in their lives during this already challenging time.

By limiting women’s bodily autonomy you are assisting in discrimination and promoting inequality. Religious freedom is freedom FROM just as much as it is freedom TO. Lawmakers need to stop trying to write religious ideas into legislation. In this case, in particular, it effectively interferes with women’s rights to make their own decisions about their own bodies and futures. It’s her body, it’s her choice. Keep your religion and opinions to yourself and apply them to your own decisions. To force them upon someone else against their will is fascism.

For the party that hates big government over reach, they are invading into the decision that a woman and her doctor make. It’s seems extremely hypocritical to me.

These (often heart-wrenching) decisions are best left to women and their doctors, with advice and support of families and counselors. The worst possible decision-makers are senators and congressmen. They are far removed from individual women and their situations, and furthermore shouldn’t be allowed to impose their personal religious or moral standards on the rest of us.

This is unconstitutional! Women don’t find out about potential birth defects until around 20 weeks in. This hurts people who are actively trying to have healthy children much more than it hurts those who accidentally got pregnant. Please please vote against this. Don’t make pregnancy more scary than it already is!!!!

When Lindsay Graham has created a fully funded system that will safely and humanely care for the babies born as a result of this bill, then he can have his religious beliefs turned into legislation. Until then, the white men currently in power need to leave women to do what is best for them and their families.

Women should decide how to handle these awful cases with their doctors and families--not politicians. Shame on you for putting your beliefs ahead of the lives and physical and emotional health of women. Know this — because of YOUR Yay vote, women WILL die. And, most likely, so will the babies. Abortion isn’t ideal, but it is necessary to protect women’s lives. The debate should be not about whether you are pro-choice or anti-choice, but rather what would happen if abortion were illegal? Look at other countries where that happens — facts are facts — women and their babies die.

This shouldn’t even be something political. We shouldn’t make laws based on religious beliefs. Look at what happened to the 13 kids chained up for years in CA. 👎

NO. The government has NO RIGHT to interfere in decisions between my doctor and myself. It’s no one’s business but my own when and why I choose to terminate a pregnancy. I find it appalling that this government claims to be against regulation, repealing rules that protect our water and air, yet is giddy at the opportunity to regulate my uterus. It’s sexist and ridiculous. This government claims to be pro-life, yet refuses to pass common sense gun control that would save the lives of children because it’s beholden to campaign contributions from the NRA. Your stupidity and hypocrisy know no bounds. I’m a voter in Ohio’s 12th congressional district and I STRONGLY OPPOSE this bill.

Gestation is a complex process. Things can go terribly wrong and sometimes the development of a fetus is not complete. I know from experience. Perhaps the anomalies that affected my child could now be detectable at an earlier stage, but they may not be. Some severe problems are not fully detectable until later than 20 weeks. I was pregnant with twins and lost one twin at the usual early miscarriage stage of 8 weeks. The pregnancy was different from my first and my doctor was not particularly engaged. I was in pain when the baby stirred and I was quite small. The baby didn’t have any kidneys and his lungs were severely underdeveloped. If I had aborted a non viable fetus after 20 weeks it would have been heartbreaking. But to go to 8 months only with my instincts telling me something was terribly wrong was devastating. It wasn’t until a few days before the premature birth that I was told that the child wouldn’t survive, and it was only because I had insisted that I needed an ultrasound. It was then I was told of the anomalies. The child suffocated within an hour of the birth. I obviously changed doctors. These late term abortions are not for capricious reasons. They are tragic situations that are best handled by the people involved. I went back to my original doctor whose hospital was a half hour from our new home and discussed what had happened and what options I would have going forward. I don’t think I could have handled another “blind” pregnancy without the option to terminate. Within a year we welcomed our son and completed our family. I had the support of a compassionate, competent doctor who I could trust. I wish every woman could be supported by someone like him. These situations are not black and white or simple. They’re best left to the professionals and the families involved.

While I see the reason for the aversion to abortions I think it is far more damaging for a child to be born to someone who doesn’t want, or is unable to take care of it. There are countless studies that show that that sort of existence is extremely harmful to a person and often (though certainly not always) leads to mental or emotional growth issues. Better a brief moment of pain then an entire lifetime of suffering.

Sigh. Seriously? Do people really think that women stay pregnant (pregnancy is not as pleasant as the fairytales say it is) for 20 weeks, and then, on a whim of laziness or self-centeredness, decide to put themselves through the misery (financial, emotional, societal, and physical) of a near-birth experience but without the joy of a beautiful baby after it’s done?? Do you REALLY think that??? And then, with inhumanely justified righteousness, you want to punish the professionals as well as the evil mother?? To pass this slimy legislation is to make it illegal for women to take care of themselves and for health care providers to do what they have been educated to do. That is stupidity in action.

This is a personal decision for each woman. No one has the right to tell another woman what to do with her body. Why is this being debated again. Why are we trying to push us back to a time when women had to find other extraneous and life threatening means to end an unwanted pregnancy. This has already been decided by Roe V Wade. Why does this admin keep rolling back women’s rights. It is unacceptable. All you people that are trying to force a woman to keep an unwanted pregnancy. You have no idea what she is going through. The world is overpopulated as it is. Seriously you have no right to enforce your beliefs on another. You want to take these unwanted babies after their born and raise them, feed them, take care of them? Hell no you don’t. It is an individual’s right to choose!!
