senate Bill S. 2280

Approving the Keystone XL Oil Pipeline

Argument in favor

Creates jobs. Reduces gas prices. Reduces overseas oil imports. Private businesses should be free to act in ways they deem profitable free of government interference.

I live in North Dakota. While the oil boom has increased crime and cause led numerous other problems in the West, however the oil is coming out of the ground and being refined whether environmentalists like it or not. It is then being transported down to refineries in the south Midwest two ways. The first is by trucks which pass through large population centers, add to highway traffic, and are more likely to be in an accident than a oil pipeline failure. The second is by train, which recently were allowed to increase their speeds through the town I live in to 60 mph, and hardly a month goes by without a local news story of a derailment and explosion. Both these methods are much more likely to cause an accident than a pipeline, which can be built away from towns, and saves space on roads and rails. I think that the safety and efficiency of something already happening is more important than some dream that city people have that they are preventing more oil being produced and saving some wildlife that can move.

Argument opposed

Potentially devastating environmental impact. Creates no more than 100 permanent jobs in the United States, according to the State Department.

We should be seeking alternative forms of energy. Establishing a priority to innovate safe and renewable energy will boost job growth in the tech sector in the long term, reduce toxic and environmentally damaging emissions, lower the carbon footprint, and promote America's technological superiority abroad.

Only creates very temporary jobs, and its long term affect will be devastating.

Ruining the earth and environment will increase global warming and extreme weather patterns. We also have to consider the health of our bodies.

Focus more on green energy. Honor the treaties America has with Native peoples, respect their sovereignty and quit building these projects on or NEAR Tribal LAND. There have been hundreds upon hundreds of contamination spills from these projects that never get cleaned up completely and poison the people and wildlife. We are tired of this, let's work towards a cleaner and less money hungry future.

Environmental damage not worth the few gallons of oil received. Already Native Americans have lost land that was theirs..

The Keystone XL Pipeline only creates temporary job growth and cash flow, at best. It almost certainly will create devastating environmental effects for our state's water supply. Agriculture is what we do. Protect it!

We need to find better solutions to pipelines of this nature. Oil companies have proved that they stay above the law, and this needs to be reigned in.

You have completely ignored your God-given responsibility to care for the earth and her creatures. Pretty sure Genesis doesn't mention making sure that you and your buddies are supposed to rape and destroy the planet. You both claim to be God-fearing men.liars.

No!! Focus on renewable energy and not on oil that is literally killing the only planet we have! If we don't have a healthy Earth then no other political issue matters.

Let's birth new economies and BETTER jobs for Americans. I bet if the renewable resource industry did as much lobbying as big oil, we wouldn't need to convince you to make money a different way...

We should focus that effort into long-term sustainable domestic energy, and not a pipe of crude oil from/through a foreign country.
