What is S. 2189?
(Updated March 24, 2019)
This bill would require the U.S. Treasury to mint coins commemorating the 400th anniversary of the landing and settlement of the Plymouth Colony, the signing of the Mayflower Compact, and the role of the indigenous Wampanoag tribes in the settlement’s success that would be issued in 2020. Treasury would mint 100,000 $5 gold coins, 500,000 $1 silver coins, and 750,000 half-dollar clad coins which would be designed and reviewed by the agency and specified groups.
The entities receiving the proceeds of the coins’ surcharges would include:
30% to Plymouth 400, Inc.;
30% to the General Society of Mayflower Descendants;
20% to the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe;
5% to the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah);
5% to Plimoth Plantation, Inc.;
5% to the Pilgrim Society;
5% to Provincetown 400.
Argument in favor
Minting coins is a great way to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Plymouth Colony and raise funds for related historic preservation at the same time.
Argument opposed
The U.S. should find ways other than minting coins to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Plymouth Colony.
Impact
Coin buyers; groups involved in designing the coins, and those that would receive proceeds from surcharges on the coins; and the Treasury Dept.
Cost of S. 2189
A CBO cost estimate is unavailable.
Additional Info
In-Depth: Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA) introduced this bill to create coins commemorating the 400th anniversary of the Plymouth Colony at no cost to the American taxpayer that generate funds for historic preservation:
“The Pilgrims’ pursuit of liberty and justice is a source of pride for the people of Massachusetts and a reminder of the uniquely American values and spirit that make this country a beacon of freedom for the world. I am proud to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrims' landing at Plymouth Rock and the vital contributions of the indigenous Wampanoag tribes with this coin set symbolizing bravery, perseverance, and camaraderie.”
This bill has the support of one cosponsor, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA).
