This bill would prohibit all federal funding — including grants — from being made available to Planned Parenthood and its affiliates, subsidiaries, successors, or clinics. Rather than providing grants or other assistance to Planned Parenthood, the federal government would make that funding available to other organizations that provide women’s healthcare services.
Nothing in this legislation would affect existing prohibitions on the federal funding of abortions — which would remain intact — or the total amount of federal funding for women’s healthcare services.
According to its 2013-14 Annual Report, Planned Parenthood provided 327,653 abortions, while receiving nearly $530 million or 46 percent of its funding from federal, state, and local level governments. A recent audit cited in The Hill stated that over $500 million of that funding comes from the federal government — though it stipulates that the funding cannot be used for abortion services.
This bill and similar legislation were introduced following the release of four secretly recorded videos which allege that Planned Parenthood sold the organs and body tissue of aborted fetuses. The group behind the videos has said that it will be releasing eight to ten more videos.
