senate Bill S. 1601

HOT CARS Act: Should There Be a Warning System For Children Left in Cars?

Argument in favor

There should be an alert to remind drivers that there’s an unattended passenger in the backseat, just like there is for leaving your keys in the ignition or not buckling your seatbelt. This bill will save the lives of many children.

There is a notice if your keys are left in the car. Why not? It saves lives.

Compare this to mandatory seatbelt alarms. After that law went into effect, more people put on their seatbelts and less death and injury has happened since then. This can only help tired, overworked adults keep track of their children and save lives from heat strokes. Sure, it might seem like government overreach, but if it saves but one life we should all be for it.

Why not? Children may be prisoners in a potentially deadly furnace. Might also save the lives of a few pets as a secondary benefit of a temperature alarm.

Argument opposed

There’s no guarantee that an alert would prevent adults from leaving a child unattended in the back seat of a car that’s too hot. It’s ultimately up to those responsible for the child to ensure they’re safe from overheating.

What?!!!! Well then i think we need an alarm to make sure we all wipe our butts efficiently! What a waste of time and money for crap like this? How about a personal responsibility act that includes teaching christian principles and our founders intent than becoming a freakin nanny state! But afterall that is what the feds want right, to force states and citizens under their iron fist? How are we different from communist china again?

I used to get angry at parents for being able to "forget" their children. But having read about the issue, I've learned how wrong I was. This really could happen to any of us. No one is above failings of the human body and mind. Please pass and help families prevent this disaster!

👍🏻👍🏻 Senate Bill S.1601bill AKA the HOT CARS Act 👍🏻👍🏻 I’m in full agreement with and recommend the passage of the Senate Bill S.1601 AKA the HOT CARS Act which would require the Secretary of Transportation to issue a rule within two years of the bill’s enactment that requires all new passenger vehicles to have a system to alert the operator to check rear seats if an unattended passenger remains. The alert would include a distinct auditory and visual alert that may be combined with a haptic alert, and is aimed at preventing children from being left in hot cars and facing death or injury. There should be an alert to remind drivers that there’s an unattended passenger in the backseat, just like there is for leaving your keys in the ignition or not buckling your seatbelt. This bill will save the lives of many children. SneakyPete..... 👍🏻👍🏻S.1601👍🏻👍🏻. 8.2.19.....

Absolutely. With the demands and stress on working parents these days it’s sad but true that a stressed out parent might forget.

Crazy we've come to this. It's beyond me how anyone could forget their child (much less two) or a pet in their car at anytime, hot or not. Sounds more like neglect or worse to me. But, if it saves a child or pet(s) from suffering a horrid death due to their brains boiling from stupid parents, then yes, of course. I'm completely mortified at the thought of their last minutes.

People are so weary & frazzled from trying to make a living in this horrendous “Wonderful” economy that they are going through their days on autopilot thus being forgetful. So sad people can’t eek enough money out of this “wonderful” economy to be able to spend quality time with family & rest. Trump’s Bunch has NO SHAME.

I have struggled with this question for days now.....An alarm to REMIND you that you have a child in the back seat!....Really?....When does personal responsibility come into play? Like Keanu Reeves said in Parenthood....you have to have a license to have a car and a dog, but any stone idiot can have a kid. One of the problems of this time in history is the REFUSAL to accept responsibility.....I remember a quote from the 2nd Poltergeist....Craig T. Nelson's character asked Will Sampson's character....For what am I responsible?.....Sampson answered "Anything in your world"

While I am for this bill, I find it ludicrous that this is being pushed when so many children are being killed by right wing terrorists with guns. All congress can do is offer thoughts and prayers. Sad.

Is there anything that an individual must be solely responsible for and that the government won’t try to regulate itself or a manufacturer to be the final authority of???

What do you know? A rare piece of common sense legislation that I think most people can agree on. It’s just a good idea. Even if it prevents just a single death, it’s a good idea. With the possibility of saving hundreds or thousands of lives, it’s an absolute no-brainer. To those who trot out the tired “nanny state” line, that’s BS. Everyone needs at least a little help from time to time. It doesn’t mean we’re being controlled. It means that we’re being helped. Big difference. Now, on the other hand, Christian organizations saying they’ll shelter or feed or clothe a needy person, but only if they attend a church service or bible study ... That’s control. That’s manipulation.

But I would also like technology that disables the phone once you leave park and go into any gear. I cannot believe the aggressive stupidity of people you use their phones while driving, putting themselves and everyone else at risk. They also tend to drive half the speed limit. Install cannons on cars?

Everyone out there who is not in favor of this bill, who are arguing "well if you cant remember your children, dont have them" or "wasting taxpayers money on others stupidity"... You are clearly NOT seeing the big picture here... The parents and whether or not "irresponsible" or "stupid" or whatever else your slinging, are not the point. The sole purpose of this bill is to save lives. Is it the children or animals fault that they were left in a hot car? NO. So how is the mindset or level of responsibility of the parents even relevant? Its completely IRRELEVANT... And the taxpayers money has definitely gone to a whole lot of things, tons of which have not included something as major as saving lives. So I'm pretty sure that YES, we can afford to have some money spent on something so simple, yet so potentially impactful in a positive way. Any life it can save is worth it. Absolutely!
