senate Bill S. 1321

Should Hacking Voting Systems Be a Federal Crime?

Argument in favor

Foreign adversaries such as Russia are actively seeking to hack America’s elections to undermine the democratic process. This can’t be allowed if faith in elections is to be maintained, so it’s important to prosecute those who engage in such crimes under federal law.

Who actually said no to this? Everyone, on both sides of the aisle, support stronger election security (except for perhaps the President, who benefited from Russian hacking in 2016.)

Senate Bill S.1321 AKA the Defending the Integrity of Voting Systems Act I’m in strong support of and recommend the passage of the Senate Bill S.1321 AKA the Defending the Integrity of Voting Systems Act which would make it a federal crime to hack any voting systems used in a federal election and allow the Dept. of Justice (DOJ) to pursue federal charges against anyone accused of such crimes. Yes we need to make it a Federal offense! However republicans have shown no interest in securing our elections. Because the only way republicans win is by gerrymandering, cheating and purging voter rolls. It should be devastating to know 70% of Americans hate the GOP and are excited to see the party be damaged beyond repair! They deserve everything they get and then some!

Argument opposed

Interfering with voting machines is already a crime under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, and the federal government shouldn’t need additional legislation to give it the right to prosecute election hackers.

This is a baloney bill. If democrats really cared about election integrity, they would insist on the common sense requirement of voter ID.

The federal government needs to keep its distance from infringing on our elections, the state’s AJ should decide if federal help is needed to investigate or prosecute this crime.

I believe that hacking election infrastructure is already a crime but is serious enough to require ‘augmented’ attention. There are cyber security experts and in particular military cyber-warriors who have watched state sponsored foreign adversaries probe and hack our cyber-infrastructure. They have been begging for administration and diplomatic support for years, so actions which could be taken to thwart these intrusions do not escalate this ‘silent’ war into a ‘shooting’ war. Our government’s response has been to have any House legislation to protect us trapped in Moscow Mitch’s wormhole of bills that the Senate has never seen; Mitch’s own over-hyped bill on voting machine security which pointedly removes cyber attacks from any consideration; trump appointment of Rudy Giuliani to be in charge of White House cyber-security, a guy who constantly butt-dials the wrong people, leaks critical information and cannot use passwords on his iPhone without Apple Store support. What is needed is diplomats who can inform foreign states of the potential consequences of attacking our open society’s cyber infrastructure, administrative and legislative recognition that these attacks can do great harm to our elections and our country’s ‘connected’ infrastructure and an administration able and willing to coordinate all government resources for a coordinated and realistic response to those would would test our resolve.

Hacking into voting machines is interfering in our elections. That is no where near okay. Yes this should obviously be a federal crime.

Few things are more important than the integrity of the vote. Interfering with it is extremely serious and should be felt with accordingly.

Don't we already have laws that covers this bill? And then there's the question, if this bill would do any good on foreign interference. 13 Russians were charged in the Mueller case, but it's very unlikely they will ever appear in a U.S. courtroom. So I have to ask, "what good is this bill in reality"? If it's strictly to build trust that our government is taking voting interference seriously, for me this won't cut it as long as trump continues to deny Russian interference! Just go back to paper BALLOTS until lying Russian trump is out and in the mean time whack these foriegn governments that even "thinks" to interfere in our elections, to their knees with sanctions!!!

Our elections must be safe. Preventing Americans from voting (black people, students, LatinX, prisoners who have served their time, etc) by making it difficult should also be a federal crime.

Definitely. Interfering with voting machines can violate American citizens guarantee to an individual and true vote and can hinder the future of the United States through increasing partisanship and clashes over policy.
