What is it?

This resolution would inform the Dept. of Justice (DOJ) that the House of Representatives insists that the DOJ fully comply with requests, including subpoenas, issued by the House Intelligence Committee relating to potential violations of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) by DOJ personnel by July 6, 2018. It notes that the DOJ hasn’t complied with a subpoena issued March 22, 2018 which compelled the production of: 1) all DOJ or FBI requests to review, scrub, report on, or analyze Trump campaign or Trump administration communications collected under FISA; 2) all documents related to defensive briefings provided by the DOJ or FBI to the Trump and Clinton campaigns; and 3) all documents relating to proposed, recommended, or actual FISA coverage on the Clinton Foundation or persons associated with the Foundation.

As a simple resolution, this legislation is non-binding and wouldn’t advance beyond the House.

Impact

The Department of Justice; and the House of Representatives.

Cost

This resolution would have no impact on the budget.

More Information

In-Depth: Sponsoring Reps. Jim Jordan (R-OH) and Mark Meadows (R-NC) introduced this resolution to insist that the Dept. of Justice turn over all remaining relevant documents owed to congressional investigations:

“For months on end, executives at the Department of Justice have done nothing but pay lip service to transparency, while instead choosing to obstruct, slow-walk, and deny legitimate Congressional attempts to obtain documents and conduct oversight. Under Rod Rosenstein’s leadership, the Department has made every effort possible to conceal the truth from the American people about what occurred in 2016 and 2017. We are tired of them giving us the runaround. It is time for Congress to hold them accountable.”

House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD) encouraged Democrats to oppose this resolution, writing:

"This Resolution is an escalation of House Republicans' conflict with Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and the Robert Mueller probe, and repeatedly chastises the Justice Department (DOJ) for alleged "non-compliance" in demanding sensitive documents. It demands that DOJ turn over all requested documents, including documents pertaining to the highly classified FISA surveillance program and documents pertaining to FBI's use of confidential informants by July 6th. Members are encouraged to vote no and reject this partisan witch-hunt."

Official Title

Insisting that the Department of Justice fully comply with the requests, including subpoenas, of the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and the subpoena issued by the Committee on the Judiciary relating to potential violations of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act by personnel of the Department of Justice and related matters.

The house provides oversight over the DOJ and the FBI; they have every right to demand they be turned over. The house committee members have security clearances at the highest level, so there really is no excuse. If they demand the records and they are not turned over, unredacted, then I’m left to wonder, “What are they hiding?” But of course, anyone with half a brain knows the answer—if they are being honest—to that one: 1) Top agency elitists began investigating a political party’s Presidential candidate long before they have said, and with no valid reason to do so, in order to prevent that candidate from reaching the highest office in the land. 2) They bent over backwards to not prosecute HRC on numerous prosecutable offenses, 3) While Brennan, Clapper and Comey set out to create the fiasco of Russian collusion—a non-crime—to stop a duly elected Trump, and 4) They lied to the FISA courts to start the ball rolling. This is chilling and should scare the heck out of EVERY American citizen. Furthermore, Peter Struch needs to be placed under oath in an open session and testify in front of Congress!

Anything having to do with a Justice Departments ongoing investigation should remain in the hands of the Justice Department until the investigation is over. Congress should stop trying to interfere on the president’s behalf.

No it is a part of a very important investigation. It should not become public record until the investigation is completed

When there are on going investigations the Congress needs to be silent. If they want information it should be when the investigation is complete. They are obstructing and leaking. Take notice America: Robert Mueller and his team of professionals have been stoically silent. That is what professionals do. Congress on the other hand has been a massive water main break, Devin Nunes needs to shut up and stay at the capital instead of running over to the White House like a sixth grade gossip!

How about they allow Robert Mueller to continue his investigation instead of interfering in it in order to protect Trump?

This is a transparent attempt to undermine an ongoing investigation. Enough!

NO! Why doesn’t congress hold djt accountable? It sounds like congress forgot it’s a separate but co-equal branch of government with checks and balances power. Even worse, it feels like congress is doing the president’s bidding. Our democratic republic is slipping away. Tragic.

Vote no. It is irresponsible for Congress to be asking for these files from an ongoing investigation. It is to our country’s benefit to let this investigation play itself to the end. Do not choose to be part of the problem, or support obstruction. Nebraska could and should choose to stand above this administration’s games.

At some point the republicans are going to need to get a back bone, with Trump, instead of being a pawn. The religionists right have sold their souls to Trump on government interference on morality, humanity and liberty. To give up your liberty for security, you end up with neither, It also applies to religion, privacy and freedom. Coming from this president, If it sounds too good to be true, it is not true! He is starting to give snake oil salesmen a good name. People have been told, by corporations and the wealthy, that a democracy is your enemy, this is so they do not loose control. A dictatorship is your enemy, a democratic government is not a business. You needed to watch what you vote for, the devil in the details! There is nothing wrong with being both conservative or liberal at the same time, having opposing views, but talking over or down to others is wrong.

There have already been GOP officials implicated in some of the investigations. This is a political play for the GOP to cover their assets before they are discovered to have violated ethics and/or the law.

Yes. Ignoring a subpoena is tantamount to breaking the law. If Congress subpoenas can be ignored Congress becomes a lame duck.

It’s frustrating to see the deep state having so much power that it has even corrupted our premier law enforcement agency. I think it’s time to make an example of these law enforcement elites and impeach and/or jail them for their actions. It’s time to crumble this house of cards. The USA is fast becoming a laughing stock and a horrible picture of what democracy can become when elites want to run it like a communistic state. I hope our Senators and Congress have the BALLS to impeach Rosenstink and fire Wray if he continues to be just a puppet of the FBI. Comey and the rest of them need to be made an example of what happens to a US citizen when he breaks our laws. I don’t care that he was an FBI agent, he’s corrupt and he thinks he’s above the law. The beauty of this approach is that I’m guessing he’s one of the bottom cards in this corrupt deep state house of cards. When you start pulling these guys out they will start to sing and implicate those that organized and operate as part of the deep state. It’s time to drain the law enforcement swamp President Trump so please fire Sessions and impeach Rosenstink!!! Mueller is just a puppet of these idiots doing what he is told. Also please end the hoax Russia collusion investigation as it is a waste of taxpayer dollars.

Republicans want to have their cake and eat it too! They can’t have it both ways! Stop the divisive politics!! Let Mueller do his job properly. Do not interfere. Law and investigations are never fast moving. If Republicans really want to help our country call on Trump to stop his lies, blatant wording designed to misinform the public and pander to his base, and most of all his violent rhetoric! More then anyone the President influences how the American people act. His actions show he condones violence.
