house Bill H. Res. 582

Should Congress Condemn the President's Executive Actions on Gun Control?

Argument in favor

President Obama’s executive actions on gun control exceeded the scope of his Constitutional authority relative to Congress while undermining the right to own a firearm. Congress needs to make it clear that these proposals need legislative approval to go forward.

This bill isn't about President Obama. It's about keeping the checks and balances in place, while upholding the Constitution. By restricting the powers of the Executive Branch, it protects both parties from a tyrannical President... Americans never know who's going to be the next President, or what he has in mind for you or I.

Argument opposed

As the leader of the executive branch the President has the authority to implement laws and craft regulations through federal agencies. If the President went too far, the courts will step in — this toothless resolution is a waste of Congress' time.

This is ridiculous, having issue with someone's political ideas is done on the debating floor not by passing pointless bills to say "I don't like you". What are you lot? 1st graders?

President Obama's actions have been a necessary step to get Congress moving forward on the gun control issue. The people have wanted better gun control, yet Congress has done nothing about it. Obama is merely getting the ball rolling when Congress refused to do so.

This bill is pathetic, to be honest. I mean, why waste your time creating this bill for the sole purpose of hating on Barack Obama, when you can instead focus and use your Congressional power to create a bill to actually solve issues that we are facing in America. This bill just shows how some Congress members really have no idea how to please the people that voted for them to create actual changes in the United States.

How many senseless acts of violence in our streets or tragedies in our communities will it take to get our nation to stop caving to special interests like the NRA when people are dying?" It's way past time the Congress stood up to our lawless president, who clearly considers himself above the law, is determined to "rewrite" our Constitution, and who has become as tyrannical as the English king our Founding Fathers stood up to and said "NO MORE!" Everyone with a brain and intellectual integrity knows that a disarmed people become prey not only to the criminal elements of their society but also to the whims of a corrupt, power-hungry, and hostile government! And, yes, when my government considers patriotism and religion to be the earmarks of domestic terrorism, rather than the CRIMINALS AND TERRORISTS that it is bringing into my country, and when that government takes OTHER actions that are CLEARLY detrimental to the security and prosperity of my country, and when that government placates the enemies of my country and alienates our longstanding allies, and when it constantly denigrates everything that is GOOD, NOBLE AND GODLY about my country, then I think I have good reason to consider that government as hostile! Now make no mistake! I'm not in any way advocating the ILLEGAL overthrow of such a government! But I condemn the Congress for not doing THEIR DUTY to put a stop to such unAmerican, if not treasonous, behavior! For a brief 15 minute history of the Bill of Rights and the Second Amendment in particular, listen to this clip from Mark Levin: https://youtu.be/WRiHs3q2DO0

A President does not get to circumvent the Constitution and Congress. His actions are lawless. In addition, gun laws only affect those who obey laws. You want to stop gun violence? Enact mandatory 10 years in prison for those who use guns in commissioning their crimes (on top of the prison time for the other crimes). In addition, go after gangs aggressively. That will reduce gun violence and make everyone safer.

I'm absolutely amazed that anyone in their right mind would be supportive of executive action on gun rights. This is classic deflection. Ask Obama to leave an open seat for the Benghazi victims or the slain law enforcement officers who were targeted by thugs who could be Obama's sons.

If we are still a country of laws and the Constitution is the foundation of all US law, the President has NO authority to issue such tyrannical edits. If Congress does not reign in such attempts to by-pass it both Congress and the American citizen loses the protections the Constitution.

Sure - but it won't matter because the establishment Republicans don't have the backbone do do anything about it. We need new conservative constitutionalists in DC
