house Bill H. Res. 489

Should the House Condemn President Trump Telling Members of Congress to ‘Go Back’ Where They Came From as Racist?

Argument in favor

President Donald Trump’s tweets telling four Democratic congresswomen to “go back” to other countries were xenophobic, bigoted, and racist. The House should take a stand by passing this resolution condemning the president’s rhetoric.

I'm glad the House showed where it stands. Anyone who voted against this has chosen to stand with racism. And it is racism. This is the same man who called majority African countries s***holes, the man who said white supremacists who killed a woman "very fine people", the man who questioned the birthplace of our first black President. All of these are racist acts. Go ask your black, brown, and immigrant friends, neighbors, and loved ones what racism looks like. This is it.

Yes, this President’s rhetoric needs to be condemned. The House should pass such a resolution and so should the Senate. How far does he get to drag this country down before Congress takes action?

Argument opposed

The House shouldn’t waste time trying to score political points by voting on a non-binding resolution condemning President Donald Trump’s comments as racist & xenophobic. There are more important legislative matters to attend to.

I’m of two minds here. Frankly, I don’t consider this to be a racist comment. If Trump had made the exact same comment about Representative Malinowski, would it be considered racist? Of course not. You can make a better case for a xenophobic comment but I don’t think so either. During the upheaval of the 60’s there was a saying “America-love it or leave it.” I think Trump meant what he said in that vein. I think there are good many Americans who might agree with POTUS here. I think a good many Americans who don’t agree with certain viewpoints are getting tired of being called racist, Nazis, etc. at the end 0f the day though both sides need to lower the rhetoric.

You do realize he said to go back to the countries where you came, use your proposed policies in those countries, and come back to tell us the results. Although I don’t like how he worded the comment, that’s pretty much what he said. There isn’t anything racist or xenophobic about the stupid tweet.

Yes, they must- his comments were directed at duly elected American citizens who represent their constituents- who have every right to challenge his policies. I personally believe that supporting Trump’s policies is anti-American and I have the constitutional right to this belief- so do they. Just avoid the emotions that Trump is hoping to generate. Don’t let emotions trap anyone into saying anything that can be turned into a campaign “sound bite” to alienate swing voters. His cult has already drank his cool-aid and won’t change until he dismisses them when their votes are no longer needed. Hopefully, this will formally get impeachment inquiries started. A formal Impeachment process should open up blocked testimony and subpoenaed evidence- and let us all see who this man really is and not just what he has ‘marketed’ himself to be. I expect the McConnell led Senate to reject impeachment; So what? If the facts conclusively and publicly document Trump’s abuses of office, gross misrepresentations, willfully misleading of the public and/or criminal acts- let us, the American public decide the political future of Trump and those who have enabled him.

The phrase “go back where you came from” in any of its permutations is intended to say “you don’t belong here.” It’s racist, plain and simple, and to imply that four women, all of whom are American citizens, three of whom were born in the US (and the fourth who has been a naturalized citizen for over half her life), somehow belong elsewhere is insulting and dangerous. “Othering” a person is a first step towards dehumanizing them, which is a step towards justifying treating them as “less than,” and taking away their rights. We should all condemn President* Trump’s words as racist, and hold our elected officials to higher standards.

This president is toxic to our nation's culture. His racist, xenophobic rhetoric is not becoming of the office and should not be tolerated or excused by the American people. As our elected officials, please do the right thing and stand up for diversity and inclusion.

We cannot allow that kind of blatant racism to stand unchallenged. The GOP silence and twisting weaseling words to escape the fallout from this stupidity is pathetic. To sit silently by is, in essence to be morally complicit in the act itself. Demand a public apology. This vile behavior must not stand.

He and his base feed off of hate. It needs to be condemned every step of the way or else it becomes the norm. He’s already normalized so much that most people if asked wether these acts were presidential or not before trump was in office would have told you no way. Never would we elect someone like that but here we are. The normalization of amoral behavior brings us one step closer to authoritarianism.

Republicans need to get a damn backbone and call this racist con man out! Their silence is just condoning these actions! So tired of this mad man in the White House getting by with dividing America with his hatred! He needs to be impeached NOW so America can hopefully start the process of healing from the damage that he has done! MAKE AMERICA KIND AGAIN!

What Trump said about Congresswomen of color was disgusting. It’s time to impeach him. Trump Republicans have to stop being cowards or they’ll be remembered for being on the wrong side of history. Lindsey Graham needs to be censured for called the women Communists. He sounds like he has lost his mind. #impeachnow

We are raising children to be color blind and here is the President letting them know it's acceptable to judge people by the color of their skin and to call them out in front of the world with racist insults. This would get a student expelled, an employee fired, a company sued, but the President thinks he can say such racist things like also calling Mexicans rapist and get away with it. It has to stop. This is not what we want for America it's embarrassing.

He is a racist. Period. If the most recent behavior of this jackass doesn’t constitute racism, then the construct doesn’t exist. He should be impeached immediately. And yet the republicans continue to support him. How can they not be considered racists as well? If it quacks like a duck.....

A House resolution stating that Trump is a racist jerk won’t change anything but will reinforce what the rest of us have said all along. At least this time it will have Congressional approval!
